ADDING POWER STEERING TO A 504??????

Hello, Can anyone tell me if it is possible to add power steering to a Farmall 504? If so how difficult and costly. Thanks

I did it by purchasing the power steering assy off of a junk 504. You need to add the oil cooler and make sure you get the propper splined shaft coming out of the steering pump under the dash. I found they don't interchange. The pump will need to be added to the rear of the existing hydrolic pump too. The return may have to be drilled and tapped under the seat. It is not difficult (I did it and I spend life in a pretty stupid condition). I recommend a propper parts book and IH maintenence manual. Jeff Forman of IN was a big help to me. He knows his 504s and geerally has parts.

THANKS for the plug Sloroll. I have quite a few parts, not sure I have a complete kit but, I could get pretty close. Parts book is a BIG help. Wide front is alittle harder to add PS to if you want it to be factory stock IH. Narrow front is alot easier and cheaper. Cooler, oil lines, handpump, subshafts, flow divider will run $400-600 depending on the source and condition.

I did it on a 504 Row Crop by installing a Charlynn on the stub that comes out of the bolster.

If was fifteen years ago so I am a little vague on it. I am sure there was a coupling and bracket that I had to fabricate.

The steering can get a little sloppy on a well used tractor with all the cheap IH U-joints. I remember replacing those. I can't remember where the pressure came from but I did use a Prince proportioning valve. I added a Farmall C hydraulic pump on the motor but it was used for something else. It probably has enough volume to run a Charlynn. The frame rail has to be notched 1/4" for clearance.

My installation was not like anything IH built. They are two different systems. One for the RC and another for the utility. IH has a very good 504 Power Steering shop manual that includes both.

You might get lucky and find a salvage yard that can sell you a complete IH system. I think it even includes an oil cooler. If you want to travel to Tewksbury, MA. You can look at mine.
