Hi guys,
I found out from you guys that the serial number of our 966 is number 28111, which puts it in the late 1974 age range. I'd heard that the max rpm for a later 966 is 2800 no-load rpm. Ours will only go up to 2500 no-load rpm, and the pump says on the plate that its max high-idle rpm is 2600. Which number is right? Ever since it came back from the dealer after they "fixed" a leaky injector and replaced the idle screw on the back of the pump, it has lost a lot of power (it used to be 110 horsepower). Now since I have replaced the injector again (it started leaking again), it seems that it will not run right at all rpm levels. It sounds good at mid-to-high range, but seems to have a cylinder running out of time at low rpm (1000 or less), as it seems to gallop a little, and will also smoke blue, but clears up as rpm increases. (it hasn't lost any oil in 2 months of use, so I assume it isn't oil burning) Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

The change from 96 horsepower 2400 rpm rated speed/2600 rpm high idle to 100 horsepower 2600 rpm rated speed/2800 rpm high idle was made sometime during 1974. Since your pump says 2600 high-idle, you've got an earlier '74 96-hp pump. With your serial number, your tractor should have been one of the very last built in '74. Your pump was probably replaced with the wrong one at some point, or your whole engine was replaced with one from a junkyard. Do you know the history of the tractor? Better back up and start over. Injectors must not be replaced one at a time, they all need to crack within 50 psi of each other. Pull all of your injectors and send them to your local fuel injection shop. As far as pumps go, I have learned that the best way to deal with them is to have them calibrated on a test stand. It'll cost you a little money, but you'll know it's right. Tell the pump shop you want it set 10% over the factory setting, that should give you 110 give or take a couple depending on what kind of shape your engine is in. Better yet, just get a new correct pump for your engine. Make sure your throttle linkage is moving through it's full range. Pull the valve cover, set the valves, and watch to see that all of your valves are moving. I worked on a 4010 Deere once that was missing on #2. Pulled the injector, found it to be very bad. Had the injectors rebuilt, thought my problems would be solved, but it still had a miss that would clear up above idle. Removed the valve cover, and found the rocker arm for #2 intake valve broken. The miss would clear up at high speeds because the valve was actually being sucked open.

Chadd There was two max RPM no load the first 66
came at 2640 then when the V8 came out the 6 cylinders went to 2800, and then the last ones back to 2640.

I just cannot get used to that faster high idle setting.

Had a '72 966 with the slower setting and got used to it.

Then I bought a 766 which had the "faster" setting and now this '76 966 that really spits 'em out.

I pull the throttle back. Just sounds like it's gonna fly apart! :>)

Well the blue smoke could be from the timeing being off or injectors that are not cracking properly . Could it be that they got there grubby fingers into the pump and cut it back . With out back tracking what they did or starting from square one we would only be guessing . Someone at the dealership may have stuck it on the Dyno and got playen with it and set it back to the 100 Hp. that showed on there wore out dyno and it is realy only turnen 90 or less . check the timeing and run the valves and find a good dyno and run it . The timeing should be 18 degrees and the no load high ideal should be the 2600 and you can adjust it to the 2600 and maybe a shade more . If all of the things don't work then it is time to pull the injectors and have them tested and maybe time for a pump rebuild . Like i said i have no idea as to what they did and now adays i do not put anything past some people to get work in.
