Is my Farmall B supposed to be positive or negative ground? Does it matter? The old battery that is on the tractor now, which is ancient, is set up as positive ground. My Super M has negative ground, but my son put a 12v alternator on it a few years back and I'm thinking he may have changed the polarity at that time.

Billy, YES it does matter cuz if its swapped the genny has to be repolarized so you dont damage the Voltage Regulator and if it has an ammeter its leads need to be reversed so it dont read bass ackwards and likewise, if its a coil ignition its leads need switched also. HOWEVER if all is done right then it dont matter cuz it can still gen regardless if genny is repolarized and the starter direction stays the same.

Tractors with alternator HAVE to be - ground or you burn up the alternator. Now if you B has a genny on it then it should be + ground as it was when new.

Shipped from factory would have been neg ground. As long as generater is polarized, it doesn't matter. Starter will turn the same direction whether you are using positive or negative as a ground.
