I don't do this too much, but I found a really interesting tractor and wanted some opinions from guys who know this stuff. It appears to be a Farmall A tranny, with a Super A block with a dipstick on the block, and a water pump on it. Altenator, with average sheet metal. Average rubber--one flat rear tire, rear wheel weights. A set of cultivators that have seen their better days, and here is the kicker....a nearly new Woods L59 with everything..guards, blades, everything. I have an idea about what the components run, but he was asking $1500 for the whole shebang and he will deliver it an hour to me..What do you guys think? Good deal or not?

If the engine is from a power unit, there will be a big notch in the rear mounting flange on the right side. This is for mounting a starter and will leave one bolt hole unused in the bell housing.

Jesse: Like the others said the mower is worth that, by all means buy it.

I'm going to throw in another possible idea on the tractor. Super A never had a dipstick, the Super A1 did, but that was only the last 1,957 Super A tractors built in 1954. You are saying it has a water pump, thus have you thought it may be a C-123 engine out of a SA1, 100, 200, 130, 230, 140 or 240. A 140 or 240 will have an automotive type water pump on fan hub, while the rest will have pump down by bottom block port and will have it's own separate pulley.

CNKS also makes the point of it being possible C-135 engine, he may well be right, however a lot of C-135 didn't have proper crankshaft for bolting up an A or SA, making that somewhat expensive. The other possibility I didn't mention was C-123 from a SC, I've never paid close enough attention to SC to know whether dipstick was used. CNKS or gene would know this.

You also really haven't said why you believe rear of tractor to be an A. Are the cultivators hand lift? Are you positive the rear is Farmall A? I'm not trying to put this tractor down, but rather I have a gut feeling your deal is actually better than you make it sound. Is it possible you in fact have a newer tractor than you think?

Hugh: It is a Farmall A rear end just because of the hand lift, casting #s, and lack of hyrdraulics. It seems to have Super A sheet metal.

Unless I miss my guess, this block looks like the A, except it has a plate over the hydraulic port, and it has the pulley on the tube at the lower part of the block, to better circulate the antifreeze.

I havent heard the tractor run, but it doesnt matter much to me, because, like I said, if you break it down by component, the parts are worthwhile. I dont have casting numbers for this engine, but I told the guy I would get back with him tomorrow. If I buy it, I will post some pictures. I am almost certain it is an A rear end.

I am just mulling this over, so I thought I would get some input from guys who deal with these more than myself. Thanks for all of the input.

Jesse: Really doesn't change a lot from the clutch housing back whether it be A or SA. The Super A torque tube is flat on top from battery to bell housing, for the hydraulics to bolt to. Farmall A torque tube is round on top.

Drawbar is a bit different, pto and belt pulley were a bit different on very early A, 39, 40 and maybe 41. All A were mag ign, while a sizeable number of SA had distributor. Late SA from about 51 on, had an improved steering box and automotive type tyrods.

It will be interesting to see your photos.

I am 16, and I just got done working on a tractor just like that and the dipstick means the motor at one time was a stationary motor. I seen a dipstick on a stationary motor i worked on. I dont believe Farmall A's had that. So you might be looking a newer engine than that of the tractor--Maybe by 5 or 6 years.

The mower is worth that much and you get a tractor too. The dipstick means that a engine from a baler or a combine was probably where it came from. If you need a mowing machine you will like it. Or sell the mower and you have a cheap tractor. I would buy it if it was close.

With the Woods, and if it runs and has no major problems, grab it. I don't remember when that engine got a dipstick. Hugh Mackay might know. It may be a C135 (if it fits, I'm not knowledgeable about that) instead of the C113 in the A/Super A, or the C123 in the Super A1 and Super C.
