looked at a 1981 3688 w/2800 hrs. the tractor seemed tight as i drove it. shifted good. the dealer said they fixed the parking brake and the owner fixed the clutch and pto. sounds like it spent some time on a round baler. when the tractor was idling it seemed to have a lot of smoke coming out the blow by tube. it has a 436 motor. is this common for this motor? it doesn't have the digital tach. can this be changed? the cab interior is bad and the tires pretty much worn. the paint is lighter than i thought it would have been. they were asking $16900. they are offering to take my 966 & 686 plus $3000. any thoughts??

thanks!!!

Duane

We have owned a 3688 on the farm for 15 years. In the 15 years we have replaced the Tourque Amplifier, and the fan belts, and no the fan belts are not hard to change. As for the smoke coming out the blowby pipe, ours too is bad, but it was also bad at 800 hrs, when we bought it, it now has over 4000, and we haven't touched the motor. This tractor gets outstanding Fuel Ecconomy. It gets better then our Massey 390-T with a four cylinder. I believe you can get cab interior kits. All in all i believe they are a great tractor.

Duane: I'd have a tendancy to keep what you have. Neither one are big hour tractors, and you must know exactly what condition they are in.

Here is my reasoning having farmed a few years and had at least one new Farmall from every series from letter series through to 66 series. IH's finest was 56 series and it was down hill after that, they were nickel and diming those tractors to death. In the 3 or 4 years those 88 series tractors were built, I saw more of them down for repairs at dealers than all 06, 26, 56, 66 and 86 series combined. Bear in mind I'm talking up to 1990 as I really haven't paid a whole lot of attention since.

Now, if I take you back to that area, the dealer never sold many 88 series, Deere had taken over. I had a Deere of that vintage myself, and had I stayed in farming there would have been more Deere. When I started farming Deere was a non issue, because of dealer. IH had 70% of the market in the area. Today there is no CaseIH dealer and hasn't been since 1998.

One other matter, a fan shaft through a radiator has got to be one of the most stupid pieces of engineering ever developed. Fine when it's new and everything is tight. What a nightmare it must be to work on. Even a simple task like changing a fan belt has to be complicated.

Duane,

Are your old tractors pretty tired? If so, they won't bring over $4500 apiece if you sell 'em outright and perhaps this is a good deal.

However, if your present tractors are good, solid field-ready diesel outfits, the Vet is right.

That 3688 is nothing more than a slightly newer version of the 966 and that new style cab may be nice, but I really wonder if it is that nice?

Dunno, I'd say it depends on the condition of your old tractors and do you really want to give up the nimbleness of that 686? Those things are pretty darned handy to have around. :>)

yes both tractors are solid field ready tractors.
i have had the 966 since 1984 and have around $17000 in repairs since then. i bought a 5288 w/6000 hrs and 1000 hrs on an o/h for $15750. this tractor was to replace the 966. the 686 is my planting tractor it replaced my 560 which i will keep for loader work. both tractors paint is not perfect. i looked at the 3688 again today with my brother. we both agreed that the tires are needing replaced and the top link was missing. so i'll try to get them to come down if not so be it. even if they do i'm not completely sold on doing this deal.

thanks for you and tractor vets input!

Duane

$17,000 sound like a lot, but spread that out over 22 years and it seems manageable. By now it should be about a new tractor. The one thing I'd be worried about is starting all over again with the 3688.

I understand what you are saying, but spread it over the hours. 5500. So in another 2500 hours he can expect to put $8500 in the tractor. Figure in how costs are rising, and he could figure to put in $10,000. You shouldn't have had to spend $17,000 on a tractor with 5500 hours. I don't know if the 3688 would be any better, but chances are good that it wouldn't be worse.

I don't know much about the 3688, and I am sure resale varies depending where you are located in the country, but I would have to value your two tractors much closer to Alan, than the tractor vet. Here in Iowa, it would take a heck of a 966 to bring $7500 at a farm sale most days. I got a feeling, with the drier weather, it will take even a better one this fall.

I don't know how you feel about it, but if you've put $17,000 in repairs since 1984, maybe you aren't too partial too it. Doesn't sound like to bad of a deal to me. How many hours does your 9 have?

thanks!

Ya had better keep your stuff as i believe your shuff is in far better shape the that 3688 . If that 436 is breathing heavy out the breather tube then that littel darling has some internal injurys . And with the hours that you are claming on your tractors then i will give ya a better apprasel the 966 we'll say that selling it at your place it is worthe 7500 not seeing it and the 686 at Tri Greens auction would fetch 6500 -8000 depending on just who was there . Myself i realy don't care much for the 88 seires as there were some problems with them and there was a bunch of problems with the hyd . systems now they may or may not have been fixed as some have not been able to fixed and some have been change over back to the old style Open center system . Lots of chage over aftermarket kits have been sold and put on the 88 seires tractor . . But hey it is your money and your dission . We just try and give good advice .
