Howdy Fellers,Been doing a little mowing with my H and the seven foot bush hog.Made 40 bucks an hour plus fuel was supplied by my neighbor.Since people have seen me out mowing for my neighbors they have been stopping by and asking me to mow for them. What would be a fair price for me to charge? I know fourty dollars an hour and fuel was just because I have a good neighbor. But he was also impressed with the results and asked me to do some regular mowing around his farm....Any advice would be appreciated....RBF

Not to put a damper on things here but you might want to check with your insurance company and make sure that your liability policy will cover you when doing custom work. Just one rock or chunk of wood picked up by the mower and flung into someones window can eat into the profits real quick.

I guess I am in low cost area but I just had a small job done with GOOD late model D5 Cat and was only charged $75/hour. I have 25 HP MF diesel with 5 foot mower and at $75 acre that some seem to charge I could take in twice the revenue that the D5 makes.

I am not trying to be a smart a#@, but how can an H handle a 7 foot brush hog? The grass must be really short? I would be afraid of taking the bearings out of the rear end with all of the torque from that size of a mower.

A 7 foot hog and an H go great together, I mow once a week with one, CNKS is right the key is to not let the grass get too high. I have mowed some pretty tough stuff with it, in those cases I turn the power screw out a time or two.

You can't apply more torque to the pto shaft or bearings in the transmission than the engine can supply. The rear end of a Farmall H will generally stand far more power than the engine (unless seriously tinkered with) can provide. Hooking to a larger load than the engine can turn will stall the engine, but it won't destroy the rear end of the H.

As a person who broke two rear ends in a H as a kid, I disagree. Not using the pto, but the tractor was overloaded, my dad was not happy with me. H should handle a 7 foot, unless the stuff is too big. The key is not to let it get that way.

You guys are doing better than me.

I mowed 200 acres for one guy and 45 for another last year and only got $10 an acre.

But I had a 16ft batwing behind my 560 and only clipping the fescue from 36" down to about 10".

I could do 8 to 10 acres an hour.

Guess I was to cheap.

Gary

By the way, I think you should post a picture of the 3 point hitch system that you put together and put on this tractor.

Just my 2 cents.

Hello Dozerhand,He has a bulk tank at his workshop and he is always good to me because I do all his mechanic work on his tractors and mowers for free but he has a Case 580 E backhoe and does quite a bit for me in return we just have a good neighbor to neighbor trade policy.I stacked straw with him tonight for about three hours and he gave me fifty dollars. He supplies straw and hay to the local race track and stables and alot of other horsemen in the area and he said he wouldnt let me help him for free because I already do too much.Hes a heck of a good neighbor as well as a good friend. He sets and watches me every time I mow around here on the Farmall. He still cant believe its the same tractor I drug home almost two years ago.He wants to run it but hes embarrassed to ask me....RBF

I have seen his work first hand on the way back from the Red power show...and I attest that the river bottom farmer did a heck of a good job on restoring this H....(Looks almost as good as one I did :-) )

In an hour with this thing, you can cover a lot of territory. Son charges $60.00 hr for skid steer; $90.00 Hr for track loader; $110.00 hr for track hoe; $60.00 hr for trucking...with the price of fuel, I think I would be comfortable with $65.00 per hour with 1 hour minimum. Customer is getting money's worth. And, as I told son when I financed his equipment, the equipment is not loaned or started up without being on paying job--dont mix friends with business--unless your trading as you mention in your email. It is good to see people have fun..
