OK. I just finished a complete rebuild of a C60 engine in a Farmall Cub. The rebuild has new pistions, rings, gasketes, main and rod bearings, etc... All clearances were checked and are dead on. I started the tractor but after about 30-40 seconds did not build oil pressure. I had put some oil on the oil pump gears during assembly. Can anyone tell me what the tricks are to correctly prime the oil system to get the oil pressure up? Any pointers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Shane

With someone helping, take out the oil filter, have them turn it over while you pour oil down in the hole the bolt for the lid goes in to.Make sure the switch is off and only turn it over a few seconds at at time.Worked for me,my plugs were stripped.

Hiding behind the hydraulic lines(if your has hydraulics) near the rear of the engine is an allen-headed plug. Remove this and prime with oil. I had the exact same thing happen and the people here directed me to this and it solved the problem.

The plug Kevin describes is the place to prime the oil pump.

It happened to me on a rebuild I sent out. There are a couple of oil gallery 1/8" pipe plugs that shops like to leave out. In my case it was near a tappet. The tappet cover (behind carb) has to come off. Get a flash light and look for a hole near the center of the block. This is the horizontal oil gallery that crosses the block from the other side.

This is an easy fix. The other missing plug is not so easy. It is located behind the cam gear. The front end, crank pulley, front engine cover, and cam gear have to come off. If the assembler left this plug out, he was probably drunk. There are several more plugs but you would have oil all over the floor if they were deleted.

I always pressure prime new engines before starting. You can use something like a 20lb propane tank fitted with a shutoff and Shraeder valve. It is an excellent tool for checking assembly errors as well as ensuring that the oil system is fully charged.

Shane; There is a small oil line that runs from the oil pump area up to the guage, and it stops up easily and will cause your oil guage to not work properly. If "priming" the system doesn't work, then you will have to drop the pan and clear that line to the guage, I had to literally "rod"mine out to get it to work. Good luck on'er!! Jim B.

Shane...I am shooting from the hip on this and about 5 years ago when I rebuilt my cub...it seems to me that there is a plug in or near the oil filter canister that you remove and fill with oil.

Check and see if this is correct.
