I took my old alt (12v conv delco)into auto zone to have tested. It failed the test not charging. To prove the machine was working properly he also tested the new one. PASSED. The guy behind the counter said this new one was the same as the old one. He called it a ONE WIRE set up. Dont need the two wires cause something like it excites only when needed. Any ways here is the tow pics of before and after. what am i doing wrong. Now the ampmeter goes all the way to charge when giving some throtle.

If you have to rev the engine to get alt. to charge ... put on a smaller, 1" pully....

To repair the rim .... cut out the rusted part....weld in a patch --- move to a solid area and drill a new valve stem hole.....Don

To get your water pump & pulley apart, first take out the tapered bolt shown sticking straight up in the rataining bar in the first picture of the bad pulley. Then the other parts will come off in order. The brass nut is water pump packing & does not have to come off to get the pulley off. (I think)
My Dad had a 400 like this with a Fast-Hitch; great machine!!
The color coded tach just showed your travel speed in each gear.

this is what the alt hooked up before looked like. The guy said the wire with the blue loop on it was not needed with the new alt.

The alternator you got is a "one wire" unit, and doesn't need the "switched excite" wire to it's #1 terminal, and the "voltage sense" wire from the large output stud to it's #2 terminal, so those terminals are covered with the black rubber plug.

The alternator WILL charge with just the large output wire connected, but, likely, the engine will have to be revved up somewhat, after each startup, for it to begin to charge (excite).

Some of us prefer the "OEM-type" 3-wire setup like you HAD, but the goofy "one-wire" units always seem like the "cat's whiskers" to the "electrically challenged", as Dell likes to say, over on the "N" Ford Board.
