Hi Guys I was wondering after reading a post down below, My H that I have had since my father died in 76 Has always had the same M&W pistons in it. The sleeves are plum worn out. I rebuilt it back in the 90s just honed the heck out of it and found some sealed power rings that fit the M&W pistons,I bought brand new M&W sleeves a few years back for the ol girl and I hope to get to this one this winter if the bussiness goes all right,Do you think that The new after market High domes are competitive with the worn M&W Pistons I have in her now. I would like to find a place and have them knurled to take care of any wear. I do know that the sleeves are better than the ones I put in the SH I built last year and they were a national brand aftermarket. SO this is way to long How would you fellas do it. Sell the M&W sleeves on ebay? Use them with the old pistons? Buy A new aftermarket kit? I will not be buying case IH or CNH at those prices. MagMan

Same piston but half the price . If your going to pull it down to fix it them fix it wright ths first time.

I was trained that Knurling pistons is a real repair, if the rings are tight in the grooves, and the fit is only 2-4 thou loose it is recommended. (doen it a lot, no regrets) if the knurling is done well it never gets near the edges of the casting/forging. if poorly done the impressions at an edge are stress risers and can cause cracks in otherwise great pistons. Do it, JimN

Dude I put a tisco true power set in my M. They had M&W pistons in them, which I was thinking of keeping. The motor was stuck so bad the pistons were no good, especially after I broke two of trying to get them out. Any way, the true power pistons had the exact same steps on top of the pistons as the ones I took out. I made a 281 cid motor and people tel me they ain't seen a tractor with that much power for as little as I did to it. Worth thinking about.

I set up it exactly as the book said. TDC, lined up the marks on the crank to cam and cam to mag drive gear. Then I turn the mag until the rotor lined up with the #1 wire. Then I turned the top toward the motor, turned the motor one complete cycle back to TDC, then turned the top of the mag away from the block until I heard the impulse snap. It starts and runs like a champ.

Thats the same way I set up MY SH but I am lacking a little power . I need to put some more time on the motor I guess then play with the mag timing. JON

Governor and throttle in reply to magman, 07-13-2006 17:06:16
Did you adjust the governor and throttle linkage? I did that too, so I'd have the most maximum throttle movement I could get. When I pull my throttle all the way back the governor/throttle linkage bottoms out against the block and the governor RPM limit lever hits the forward most part of the governor housing simultaneously. No need to put in a stronger spring that way.

No real instructions new puller, I just searched here a few weeks or so back someone told how to grind the weights and braze everything thats elogated up tight. I also have a little newer gov that was set up different that I decided to use. But the main thing was evrything tight the right spring or in my case a solid bar made on the lathe instead of a spring. and reworking the weights a little. I also redid my intakes on the head and intake with a homemade stone hone from a brake cylinder set up. Opened them up and polished them up also. The machine shop used the stock valves I did not have the intakes opened up. All ready had a new valve setand was getting pricy all ready. There are so many little tweaks but it takes time to figure them out without ruining something. the pulling board is a good place to lurk to get info and chad s has been pulling stock through stroked tractors for a loong time and sells parts also for goveners and distributors and such. I just have to be carfull that they are not monitoring RPMs with a gusge becues I have not reworked my throttle yet to go 10% over when I am checked then change it to the 2300 or more when I need it.
