I'm restoring a 1947 "H" and there is a part that I can't find a place for. It's a 1/4 inch pipe with threads on one end but straight with no threads on the other. It's 4.25 inches long. It is not the grease tube for the throw-out bearing as that is threaded on both ends. I took the tractor apart over a year ago and my memory is not as good as it once was. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for your replies. It"s a bother when the memory goes. I"ll pull the pan and replace said part.

Light bulb just went on in reply to Charles N, 07-13-2006 16:31:02
It is for the inside of you engine. It mounts on the inside of the engine where the oil filter mount goes. On the inside of the motor there is a threaded whole where it screws into. I'm really not sure why it is there. I think it may have been for models equiped with a dipstick. My M doesn't have a dipstick but that tube was there. I'll bet money that's what it is. Any takers?

It sounds like the pipe that goes up into the block into the oil gallery in the back on one side to drain back into the pan. JON

Is it a big deal if you don't put it back in? I didn't 'cause I figured it was for the dipstick and I dodn't have one.

I am not sure if its open it would be ok I guess. I broke mine off in the block and the machine shop drilled tapped and replaced it with a plug, so I took it out and put a larger pipe in I had to bend it just right so the crank would not hit but it seems to work. its a oil return. Unless it needs to be in oil for the pressure to be right I am not sure.Maybe someone else will chime in. JON

if you would have left the pipe plug in that your machine shop installed you would not have any filtered oil. that pipe is the outlet of the oil filter. it just returns the oil away from the crankshaft and connecting rod so it doesn't splash around.the purolater system uses the small hole in the long bolt that holds the filter canister on to meter the oil.

Charles,

Are you talking about that little chunk of pipe that drains the radiator down thru the bolster?

Dunno,

Allan

No, that's also threaded on both ends for a cap. Mine was anyway.

Its for oil returning to pan from oil filter. In pipe size its 1/8 inch pipe and threads.
