Curious about a tractor in the 460 size capability. Is there a Farmall 460 and an IH 460? If so, what differences are there? I'm thinking one of these, or similar size, with TA would be first choice for the baler puller.

Farmall was the row crop version. International was mostly the utility as others stated, but industrial, grove, wheatland, and Hi-Utility versions (all relatively rare) were based on the utility, also. If you don't need the clearance and need a wide front, the utility version will turn shorter than the wide front Farmall. Field speeds ranged from a little over 1 mph in 1st TA, to about 7.5 mph in 4th. The taller the tire the faster the speeds. It will go about 17 mph in 5th with 14.9-38 tires (Farmall), or about 18 mph (International)

The 460 was availabe in row-crop, (Farmall) utility, and industrial versions. The 560 could be had in row-crop, Farmall, Wheatland and industrial versions. Fuel chioces were gasoline, diesel or LP. Once you got into the later models 504 and 656 it gets real confusing as to row-crop, high utility, high-crop, utility, high utility. TA was an option.

Farmall is a row crop and IH is a Utility. Which one is the best is your personal choice, I prefer a row crop, where you may prefer a Utility.

Thanks guys, but what is it that makes a row crop tractor? I know that most have narrow front. I assume generally a higher tractor to get over any crops easier? What about gearing, lower or higher geared than a Utility? Thinking about an inline baler later on and thinking more clearance for the windrow would be better than the 300U and the 77 Standard I'm now using. I'd like at least close to 20mph road speed as I travel quite a bit, and the TA would make the slugs a non-problem. The 77 is JUST slow enough, but could really use some more speed on top. The 300 works good in that respect, es[ecially if I went to a bit taller tire. But, I'd like some more mass and hp under me.

Row-crop tractors like you said were taller to get over the crops, but also had adjustable rear tread width(axles you can slide the hubs in and out on) to adjust for different row spacing of crops versus the utilities and Wheatlands, etc. which usually just had a fixed hub that the wheel bolted to with little or no adjustment.

Like Cowman said, row-crops were available with wide fronts, as well as narrow. In general, the wide front row-crops had the axle forward, about directly under the grille, whereas on the utilities had their axles back further, about directly below the fan.

row-crops after about 1960 many had adjustable wide-fronts. The drawbar will be lowet point on most tractors. I use a shield to keep the hay from catching.
