I think I have a major problem!

I don't know what is wrong with me, but I think I get bit by some Farmall bug or something, and I have been stracken with an illness! My grandfather owned a Farmall when I was a wee lad. It was the first vehicle I ever drove, and the memories have stuck with me. Well, I recently moved to farm country (I am active duty Navy, grew up in the city, so I've never been around farms much) because my base is stuck in the middle of California. So I start seeing Farmalls all over the place! I was talking to a friend of mine in Washington, and he just inherited his grandfather's Farmall A, and he's going to restore it and use it in parades! "What a great idea!" I thought. So I called my Dad and talked to him, and it turns out through what he told me, and what I found on the internet, that my grsndfather owned a later '40s M and H. I don't remember which one I drove, as the look the same, and both are huge to the eyes of a child. So, I see this tractor junkyard, and visited it this Saturday. THey had junk, but on the way I saw a very old looking small farm with a Farmall sitting in a field with some other stuff. I can't see it very well from the road, so I get up the nerve to drive up to the house. I intruduced myself as a loon who just wanted a closer look to see what kind of tractor it was. So the farmer takes me to it... or should I say THEM... He has sitting in his field a late '40's M, and TWO H's! None of them worked for various reasons! I didn't know what to do! I wanted to buy all 3 right there! But what the heck am I thinking!
I don't have a truck.. just the family SUV. No trailer. My house won't be ready until mid-Sept, so no garage to work on them. No where to store them. No way to pull them out...

ok, let me be honest... I could come up with solutions for all of that. I could rent a rig and a huge trailor. I could probably store them in long term storage on my base... I can work on one at a time once I get a garage. But there is one big problem... I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF TRACTORS, WHAT-SO-EVER

I'm ranting. I realize. It's late. I should be sleeping. But I can't get the image of myself driving these restored show tractors in a parade out of my head.

I have a sickness, and I have no clue what I am going to do about it. Should I ask the farmer if he would give them up? hmmmmm

Your story sounds pretty much like mine. I didn't even know what "rings" were when I bought my H. Engine was stuck, etc., etc., but I bought it anyway and have been sick with antique tractor fever ever since. I had to do a complete tear-down and rebuild. I got most of the info I needed by searching the archives of this site, asking questions on this site, and buying manuals and books on this site or at tractor shows. Here's my webpage that summarizes the restoration of my first tractor (an H).

Have fun!

Tony

Thanks for all the great comments. I will have to sit down with the wife and try to rationalize this a little. I don't know anything about engine rebuilding or car mechanics, so it is a daunting task to look at. From what I am guessing, a restoration to show tractor finish could run around $3000?

Also, is there a good book that takes a lamen like me step by step through a rebuild or restoration?

Thanks

From an ex swabby to a current one, you will get hours and hours of enjoyment getting grease under your nails. When I joined the canoe club, 806's had just hit the market, 30 years later I gravitated back to what I grew up on-an H and a M. It kinda grows on you....Don't know how far you are from retirement but the suggestions of getting your buddies out to help you is a good one. Lots of latent talent available for a Saturday working party of wrenchin and cleaning. Good luck to you!

Hey Mike in reply to Mike CA, 07-17-2006 00:16:30
You must be stationed at Lemoore, right? Hornet guy. I won't hold that against ya'. lol. I'm stationed at NAS Whidbey. I've been here for 16 years. I have an M that I recently restored and it runs like a champ. Farmall tractors are easy to work on. These guys on here can point you in the right direction for anything.

Actually, I just left Whidbey. I flew with VQ-1 on EP-3"s. Now I"m on shore duty as a Substance Abuse counselor.

But I wouldn"t mind being an Enlisted Aircrewman on the Hornets :)

Purchase the tractors...all of them. Only then will that world "we" are in come into focus. That world is "Old Iron Oz"!! About then your wife will close her eyes and keep repeating "there is no place like home" while clicking her ruby shoes together.
Your malady is not rare and I can say this with confidence, you are asking the wrong group for strength. Would you go to the favorite town watering hole and ask for advice on temperance?
If those finds bring back memories lost worry about the details later! hee hee hee

Of all the antique tractor bugs to get, the FARMALL bug is the best!

The H and M models are about as straight-forward to work on as anything you'll find. Learn to enjoy your illness; there is no cure.

Your base will have an auto hobby shop. Those shops are very well equiped. Buy a good canvas tarp and start wrenching. This forum, books and all of your Navy buddies, that actually grew up on farms or operate the generation equipment, will supply all the knowledge to get you started. It will at times be frustrating, but what is'nt. lol gobble

Pick out the one with the best physical condition, and go for it. Then hit the book stores and look for books by Guy Fay & Andy Kraushaar. Then go to binderbooks dot com and get a owners manual. By then you will know what else you need. (parts book, repair manuals, etc.)
As a former anchor clanker, I can tell you there is no cure. ken

You had better grab them. Round up some of your Navy buddies and get them to help you. They will enjoy the outing. Hal
