There are 3 tractors sitting broke down in a field. Two H's, and one M. If I can only choose one to restore. Should I take an H, or the M? I'm going to assume the first response would be to take the one that is in the best shape. But let's assume they are all in equal shape. What is the difference between an H and an M other than size. And would would lead a new guy to one or the other?

It will be a show tractor. I want to use it in parades, and thats about it. I have a 3 car garage where I plan on restoring it, then after that, I... well, I don't know.

I think I'm leaning toward an H just because of the smaller size. But maybe an M. hmmm

Echoing what some others said - pick the one that seems to be in the best shape. (Or get all three!)

And...as someone else mentioned, look at the serial tag to determine the age, and if any are the "super" models. Add-on parts such as power steering, etc, are neat.

Next thing to check is the height of your garage door! You'll probably have to pull the muffler to get it in there, but it's a pain to have to pull the steering wheel every time you want to work on it!

The M will do everything the H will do, and more. It will use more gas, but not a lot more on light duty. I'd lean toward the H for convenience.

Can't help ya'; I'm prejudiced because I grew up on an M. But whichever way you go, you'll have fun.

Also, look at the serial numbers to see if there is anything special about them. Some War time M's are more rare than others. Also, some serial number suffixes are neat to see. Are there any attachments that would be neat to have, M&W parts, hand clutch, 9-speed tranny? Are they Super H/M? I personally have 4 M's, and really like the size, but that can be a bear to feed and move around.

Mike...
Both the Farmall H and M are great tractors...I have both...
The H is really fun to drive.....The M seems like a powerful beast that can do any thing.....

You must decide...I would rather spend more mony up front and get one that runs well and dont leak(they all leak some place) ....then all you have to do is clean, light repair and a slick paint job....add new tires and you have a great tractor.....

Get them M. Parts are easy to find, same for the H. But more than likely you will take it to show that has a tractor pull and you will want in on the fun. You can easily get %50-%60 more horse power out of an M than it came from the factory with. Pulling antique tractors is a blast. If you get the H and decide to pull with you'll say you should have gotten the M when you see them pull. I started with a case VA several years ago. When I pulled ofr the first time I went out and bought an M. The tires I just on it makes it hard to beat in a pull. Keep in mind one thought, always get the biggest tractor, of the type you're after, for the money.

The H is a heck of a lot easier on gasoline than the M, but the added HP and weight of the M
makes it my choice. You will almost certainly hook onto something that the H can't handle. The H is much lighter in the front end than the M and it will lift much quicker when pulling heavy things. Also the M gives you the option of pulling it and standing a chance of finishing a pull in the top 6 or so. last , but not least I haul an M on a 7000 lb trailer with 84",s of fender to fender clearence with no problem at all. I am legal and my GMC 4 wheel drive has no problem pulling or stopping it. An M with the wheels reversed has an outside measurement of about 78"'s with 12.4 x 38 " tires.

Take the 2 H's. One to restore, the other for parts, and parting out. Don't get involved restoring two different tractors at one time. By the time you have a year and about 4000 dollars invested in one really nice tractor, THEN you can decide if this game is really for You. Don't worry, there are plenty of these old gals around and when you decide to add to your stable it won't be hard to do.

Mike I grew up on an H and Super A. We had a neighbor that had a M he said I can put 40 Gal a day through it on a 3 disc plow. Well later Dad and my Uncle traded the H for an M the difference was on a 3 disc plow ( HM150 ) the H would pull it in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, the M in 3rd. Found out later the neighbor was talking about when he ran it around the clock. The M will use more fuel on some jobs and not on others just more work.

Don't get just one, purchase all 3. The H is easier to transport on a trailer and has less horsepower whereas the M can weigh up to 1,500 lbs more and make it more difficult to trailer. The M has more horsepower and if it will be a show tractor the added power is not needed and maybe to heavy to haul around with a truck that is rated less than a 3/4 ton. Only you can decide so what do you plan to do with it, maybe we can help more then.
