I have a Cub with a mangled Serial #. I have casting dates of Oct 49(hyd housing), Nov 49(block), and Dec 49(head). My question is this, would this have been sold as a 1949 or 1950? Would the tractor have been assembled before Jan 1,1950 with a head that was cast on Dec 6, 1949? No, I haven't found any white paint except on the grill area. Thanks in advance for your help!

The published Cub serial numbers were by calendar year. Engine and serial numbers did not match and the running difference varied over time.

Recognize that Farmalls were not produced by model year. There is really no such thing as a 1950. It may have been assembled in 49 or 50 and it didn't matter to IH back then. Very few changes were made in the production runs and no changes were made to introduce a new model year as an inducement to sell.

A red Cub is a red Cub, while the white deomnstrators were produced for a short time, there was still no "model year".

Mavbe so as far as changes are concerned but there are serial number breaks supposedly from IH that list serial numbers by production year. According to Guy Fay IH fiscal year started Nov. 1 and have read from several sources that serial number breaks were about that time of year.

IN MY OPINION in would be a 1950, first I understand model year started in last quarter of year not Jan. 1, second it is likely that head cast in December would not have been assembled on engine and on to main assembly line by Jan. 1 considering holidays.

It is not unusual to find that IH parts cast early one year are on a tractor that is identified as the next later year. I saw a 1963 with several castings from January 1962.

The engine serial number should be readable, and it should be really close to the chassis serial. Won't be the same, just close.

Not all 1950's were white demonstrators. Only some of them were. The rest were "red sellers" as in they were painted red to be sold after the farmer got his socks knocked off by the white demonstrator.

It would be a 1950. IH changed years November 1 each year.

Some confusion on that. Fiscal year started Nov 1, but the white tractors are thought to be built in Jan, Feb, March of 1950. If that is not true, then you can't tell by casting codes. I have an origially white C with at least 3 castings bearing a March code. The white ones are thought to have been built in the 1st quarter of 1950, if IH meant fiscal, then it would be Nov, Dec, Jan, which excludes my tractor. Also if it is fiscal, they were built during two calendar years. My personal opinion is that the 1st quarter of 1950 means calendar, meaning the Cub in question was not white. I would like to know for sure, though.
