Hi All I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the valves on a 1946 M should be set at? I seen the chart for the C in a previous post, would the order be the same for setting them? I was also wondering what a good compression would be? Should compression be checked with tractor running or just turned over? Thanks Terry

The order is the same. See the link for the specs. Note that the number given is for warm valves, set them .002-.003 MORE cold and check when hot. As in the other post the engine is not running when checking the compression. Remove all the plugs, and crank the engine with the starter several times to get the reading. It should reach the max compression in 4-5? revolutions. Be sure the throttle is wide open. What the reading will be depends on the condition of the engine, and what pistons are in it, a lot of them have been modified. Note that in the chart, the standard distillate/kerosene engine has less compression than the gas. If your serial number does not have X1 after the serial number, it is a distillate engine.

with the years that have passed since the old distl. engine (99.99% of them have had and up grade to higher comp. and if they are down on comp then it is time to do something about it . As for me i have gotten to like them high alt. pistons . Sure does make a S/MTA come alive.

The M engine is not listed in the chart you referred to -- in that case do it by firing order as TV says, 1342.

The correct valve set is .017 HOT , now the way i do them is with each hole at TDC following the fireing order 1342 . For the comp. check remove all spark plugs with the throttel wide open crank the engine over for four hits of that cylinder and write it down and go to the next when done avg. them out and see what ya have if it is more then 10-15 % differance then she need some work either valves or a rebuild .

I'm pretty sure the valves are .017 when the engine is warm, I may be wrong. You don't want the tractor running to check compression.
