wide front for 656 revisited

Are the wide fronts from any other tractors exactly the same as the wide front on the 656? Am having trouble finding a replacement for mine.

Be careful.

This tractor was setting at the stops when I took this picture.

Just because it is red and bolts up, doesn't necessarly mean it's gonna turn correctly.

Good point, Allan. I forgot to mention that those old 460/560 front ends don't turn anything like a 656. Did you ever figure anything out on that front end?

Hi KB,

Yep, we finally got 'er straightened out. Put the correct front on and all is well.

You can adapt a newer front to an older tractor, but ya can't go the other way and adapt an older front to a newer tractor without a heck of a lot of back lot, coble-job engineering because they use totally different methods for the stops.

KB: Read my post, it's nothing more than length of center control arm in relation to spindle control arms. You can make any of the older Farmalls turn shorter by adding 2" to the center control arm. I've seen it done on a 560 and also a Super C.

There is one problem, they are harder to steer and the older power steering like 460 and 560, will not measure up.

First off, you've got a FARMALL 656 ROW-CROP, right? If so, the wide front from 460, 560, 706, 806, 1206, 544, 756, 856, 1256, 1456, 826, 1026, 666, and 686 FARMALL ROW-CROP tractors will bolt up. There were some minor variations, like the 1456 had the stay rods welded to the center tube and the 666/686 had a heavier stay rod set-up, and the 460 and 544 probably have lighter spindles and hubs. None of that will prevent any of those front ends from bolting up. Now, if you have an INTERNATIONAL 656 UTILITY, it's a whole different story.

KB: Those Farmall front ends will actually bolt up and work on a 656 Utility. It will sit a bit high on front, but that can be overcome by larger rear tires.

Getting back to mounting a 966 front end on a 656, it was done by IH dealer and stabilizer cross member had to be modified. They replumbed the hydrostatic steering to the 966 remote steering cylinder. This happened as a result of a new 966 buyer wanting 4x4. The 656 front end was installed on a Farmall 300 using 300 center casting and stabilizer cross member. The guy with the 300 had both center control arms, and said it was a choice of turning short with strong arms, or steering like a stock 300.

Don: You say replacment. If you wish to use your casting that bolts to 656 plus the cross member from side to side under oil pan Every wide front from SH-SM through to last 56 series will fit.

Prior to 06 and 56 the center control arm is shorter and they don't turn as sharp.

I even know of a complete 966 front end being put on a 656. The IH dealer installed it and changed steering to match up.
