i want to a put belt pulley on the 400 but the belt pulley that I have came off of a 460 that looks to be too small. the cover plate on the 400 is a lot bigger than the 460. I did not know their were 2 sizes of belt pulleys. it appears that someone has put heavy gear oil in the trans. and the rear end. The oil level is also low, could that be why the TA is not working? Lastly what oil for hyd and power steer. Thanks

A belt pulley off a M or Super M will fit. But you will have to take off the gas tank and hydraulic tank, and controls to install it... at least that was the way it was on my 300.

The gear oil has nothing to do with the T/A not working. The T/A clutch could be out of adjustment, but most likely the ramp roller are worn out. You"ll have to split the tractor to fix that one. As far as the level goes, there is a plug on the side of the trans to check. Gear oil is okay for the transmission, or you can use IH"s hytran which also can be used in the hydraulic system. You can add fluid on the side of the hydraulic tank just below the hydraulic levers.

Get a operator and service manual from Binder Books dot com. It is money well spent.

I put Hy-Tran in my son's trans/ rear end and hydraulics. For as the belt pully I believe the one off a 460 would be the same as a H, Super H, 300, and 350 so don't think it'll fit the 400. Shame we are not closer to each other I've been thinking about taking my son's off his tractor. Hope this helps David
