Model A starter question

I just overhauled my "A" and installed the high compression pistons. It runs great! My problem is the starter, it was professionally overhauled and it will not spin the motor. I installed a new 6v battery, new 00 cables and new starter switch. If I hit the starter with 12v it easily spins the motor. My question is was there a difference in the early "A" starters and the later higher compression "A" starters? Thanks in advance.

I overhauled my B (same engine) and used oversize, high compression pistons. I have 135+psi compression each cylinder.
6 volt battery, 1/0 cables, it spins over just fine.

If your connections are clean, bright & tight, yours should do the same.

Did your "professional" starter overhauler rewind your starter for 12 volts?

I have used several kits with domed pistons and overbore. Never have a problem with a 6v starter sometimes i have used a fresh rebuilt one that i get for little over 100 from HARVEY BROS. Your rebuilder didnt do a good job as 625 amp batt with 1ga cables will turn the engine with no problems.

Doctor, When you say if you hit the starter switch with 12 volts she spins, are you jumping to the starter side of the switch or the input side and still using the switch to make her spin???? The obvious purpose of that question is to see if could be a switch problem. Even though you say a new battery n cables did you remove, clean n wire brush any n all other connections such as the frame ground and the starter etc cuz it only takes one bad connection to cause trouble.

Even if the starter isnt stroung enough at 6 volts to crank over a piston on compression, it ought to grunt or try at least until a piston comes up on compression, does it do that or like never turn at all???

Ya dont reckon the starter rebuilder converted it to 12 volts when he did the rebuild???? maybe he picked up a set of 12 volt field windings by mistake!!!!! !!

I have no specs or data to answer your question of any difference in the starters, but I doubt there could be so much difference the regular 6 volt starter wouldnt still crank the engine over albeit slowly.

For now (assuming the battery is okay like ElToro noted) I gotta go with a bad cable connection or a bad starter connection or a bad ground or else the rebuilder accidentally made a 12 volt starter out of it.

You should check the specific gravity of the electrolyte in each battery cell to see what they read. They should be close to one another in the readings too. Hal
