My cub has become a little hard to start. After 10 minutes of work, exhaust becomes irritating to eyes and nose with no visible pollution. After 30 minutes of mowing, power starts to fade with too little power to mow after 60 minutes. The tractor will not restart until it sets for an hour or two. The pattern then repeats itself. This tractor until recently would start & restart easily by crank or starter with power for hours on end. I need your help!!!!!
Sincerely,
Dennis Walberg

Dear Friends,
Thanks for your helpful hints. When reading your responses, I realized that I didn't mention that my cub has a magneto. Does that fact change the diagnosis for the problem? Will the "hot to the touch" test still be valid with the new info.
Sincerely,
Dennis Walberg

I, of course, have to add in to check the vent on the fuel cap. If its clogged, it will slowly starve the engine. Have fun.

Rustys right and you can also check for spark right after its dies on you. Best way to find a problem like your is to check little things when it happens and checking spark is east to do. Just pull a plug wire and hold it about a 1/4 inch from the block and turn the engine over with the ignition on. You should have a nice brite blue spark, if not then its probably the coil.

I agree with rusty, The fact (if not the denial of) global warming has coil failure on its hit list.

You will recieve several replies telling you that you have a carburetor problem, but I think the first thing to check is the ignition coil. If the coil is weak, it will not fully ignite the fuel, thus the burning eyes symptoms, and if the coil gets weaker as the tractor runs, eventually the engine will just stop. Next time the engine stops, lay your hand on the coil, carefully, it should be warm, but not so hot that you can't touch it. If it's hot, replace it.
