Hey everyone Hope some one can help me out a little. Long story short, My grandpaw just passed and he left me and my sons an old Cub. Iknow a little about Fords and even less about Farmall. The tractor had acouple of stuck valves but we got her running. The question I have today is what type of lubercant goes in the rear axle and how do you get the water out(you should have seen the engine oil) The rear end seems to whine a lot. Is this something to worry about?

In addition to what the others have said, I would also drop the oilpan, clean it out and replace the gasket.

The oil is 90wt gear oil. 80-90 will do just fine.
The way to get most water out is to drain just the water from the bottom after it has set still for several days. (I would replace the oil) drain it and feel around in the sump with a magnet on a flex stick (mechanics tool)to pick up trash and filings. Then I would flush a quart of kero, or diesel through the filler to the drain, and let it drip for an hour. Then refill. The whining is common on the cub. If it is too loud to tollerate, and varies with ground speed not which gear, the ring and pinion may be worn (especially if a lot of filings come out of the dif). They can make modest noise for years (especially with new oil)
thicker oil in the 100ds of viscosity can quiet them some, and will work fine if you do not live in the NORT. JimN

Drain all the old goop out the rear end. Put a few gallons or kerosene in the rear end, use a parts washer brush or an old paint brush to brush it around and clean it up real good. Drain the kerosene out and leave it open to let it dry out, make sure its in a clean place to nothing falls in. Then refil with 90wt gear oil. Im not familuar with cubs at all but that is how i did it with my massey harris 44. Im assuming that is pretty much basic but wait till some one else chimes in to correct me or agree with me.
