Just put together a water pump with new seals and a new felt seal as well. Now with the Retaining nut tight, the water pump turns kind of hard. It turned fine before I put the felt seal in. I coated the felt seal with a light coat of grease before I installed it in its groove. Should it go hard, or did I do something wrong? It seemed like it was a little thicker than the one I removed, but it is the part the dealer gave me. Thanks,

Chad

Do you have the spring-loaded driver on the shaft? Yeah, it probably will be more snug than it was but if you have the nut too tight it will heat and take out the seal. Kinda hard to tell how tight is too tight from here but you probably won't be able to turn the bare shaft with your fingers.

I suppose I should clarify. The fan belt pulley/waterpump assy turns hard when you are turning it using the fan blades. The driver and driver pin are not installed.

Hummm, I don't think it should turn hard.

It turns easy if I remove the felt seal. Does it need to be compressed before it is put in?

I don't know. maybe just a little more grease and it will wear itself in?

The new felt seal is only 3/4 as thick as the new one. If it put the old one in it turns just fine. Do you think it will wear in?

I'd run it a little and see if it gets hot

I can't say for sure since I have never done one but most things that you rebuild will turn hard till they have worked in/broke in.

If the M is like the H pump, it shouldn't turn hard at all, without the driver. Just two ball bearings & a seal. Sounds like you have something in a bind. I have one H pump that has the thrust part of the shaft carried wore doen so far that the impeller drags on the pump housing but without the driver you can't tell. ken
