Finally decided to do the rebuild on my 48 super A. First, what size puller to get the crank pully off. I know it needs to be a split puller to back it, but how big? Second where do you get a oil pump rebuild kit? hopefully not at the stealership. What kit would be the best buy for the buck on sleeves, pistons, gaskets, bearings? According to the manual there are no bearings for the cam. What do you do in that area if it is worn?

I do not have the sleeves out or pistons yet. but oil pressure is slim to none and constant blue smoke out the exhaust. also coolant in the oil, leaking around number 2 sleeve. number 3 sleeve and piston changed at some time in it's life.

anything else to check. looked like the head had been changed at one time also. different color than the block when i bought the tractor. I have not looked at the valves but it did not miss when running.bottom of valves look good and may just need a little compound lapping.

thanks.

Rent a cherry picker (engine hoist) to be safe! Cheap! rent for 4 hrs then four hours to get it back on the trans. JimN

Built the puller, took longer to build it than remove the pulley.

I see all my gears are one tooth off from the punch marks.I wonder why? Have my engine stand put together, just need to figure how i'll mount it to the block. My tractor is supported by the bell housing. only thing sticking out is the block. how do you get it mounted to the rear without a hoist? too much stuff in the way to get the front end loader in the shop also.might could get the boom pole in and spin the block so i can get it on the stand.after i get it loose that is.

also should i leave the aluminum peices alone that are on the bottom of front and rear?

In addition to the fine info below, I would add that the camshaft runs directly in the block, (no seperate bearings) I have never heard of them failing, so it should not be an issue. JimN

You can buy sleeve and piston kits from this forum, some include bearings. You would need to have your crankshaft measured for wear to determine which bearings are required. Your local machine shop can obtain bearings too. To pull the damper pulley you should build a puller or have it made like Bigdog did for a Cub. Here's the web site for his puller. Hal
PS: To reinstall pulley place in your oven at 250 degrees and heat the pulley.
