I am eyeing a Super M TA for my next project. The TA is out on the low side. I know nothing of TA's! Is this a job I can tackle myself and how spendy is this fix. Would like to eventaully hook this up to a small square bailer. Thank You..

I bought a SMTA a few years back with lots of problems. I only paid $100 for it though with aftermarket 3 point so was ok. I used it without ta on low side for a couple years then had to split it to fix the pto disconnect so fixed ta at the same time. I really like it especially with a baler. Mine only took ramp and roller setup and some seals and gaskets to repair so probably had $150 in it plus my labor. I have the blue ribbon service manuel, IT book and a parts book and used them all. Makes a nice tractor.

I bought a SMTA last year very reasonable. Because, 1, the owner had just bought it and hadn't run it, so he didn't know the condition of the engine. 2, the T?A was "out" . It had power steering. Thanks to all the guys on here that talked me through some axle and PTO repairs. Then changing all the fluids, and all the engine electricals, a carb rebuid, valve adjust, timing set, govenor adjusted, new battery and cables, and the engine runs flawlessly. Adjusted the clutch, linkages, rebuilt pedal assembly, readjusted the T/A, and guess what, the T/A works perfect. I removed the PS and will probably get ballpark 500 for that. So I figure I can now subtract 1500 from what I paid for the non- runnig beast, and I really got a great deal. Better to be lucky than smart. I took a big chance on the thing and came out smelling like a rose. So, go through all the steps , in the right sequence and adjust all the clutch, TA components and linkages and you just might have a good one.

Same happened to me with what I thought was a bad TA in a newly purchased used 400. The oil had a viscosity almost like roofing tar. I changed it and now the TA is fine.

steelwheelranch.com has a newer style TA that is reasonably priced. They specialize in IH/Farmall and don't get into your pocket too bad. It isn't a very hard job, just make sure you're blocked and supported properly.

The good news is that once you get to the TA, it's not too difficult to repair. The bad news is, to get to it, you've got to split the tractor twice. Not exactly safe or easy unless you've got a hard, level surface to work on, an overhead hoist of some sort, and some heavy-duty stands. To do it yourself, you will probably end up with $1000 in parts into it, as you would have to be crazy not to replace the main clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced while you've got it apart, and you need to figure in 15 gallons of good hydraulic fluid.

If you are mechanicly inclined and have the equipment to split the tractor and take the ceter section out you can do it. I can sell you a rebuilt unit for under $500. or parts for around $130. I think to fix that TA. JON
