I have a 51 Farmall MD.Not fully restored but in good running condition. Kept inside. I try to start and run the tractor once a month. Starts and runs easily, with one problem. For awhile after it starts it will run rough with white smoke for a variable period of time ie 5-10 minutes, then it will sputter for a few seconds then runs like a swiss watch with no smoke. Cleaned fuel tank and put in brand new fuel, but this hasn't helped. Bleeding injectors doesn't seem to help and all injectors seem to work the same when it is running rough. It almost seems as if a valve is stuck, then suddenly opens. Anyone have any thoughts?

There are several things that can cause this problem with the old gas start diesels , you could have a cracked per cup , you could have one injector that is not cracking at the correct pressure , one hole could be low on compression , there may be one starting valve that may not be seating or like you have said sticking OR THERE MAY BE A CRACKED Sleeve - block or even a cracked head . Ya just don't know with out realy getting into one and checking every thing out . Oh yea almost forgot it could even be the woren bushing in the injecton pump causeing the littel cam shaft to bounce around . Had that problem with my old 450 D and that was back before i knew much about tractors . The bad part of my problem was that even though i did not know much about them back then i had two of the best I H mechanic of the time come down and help me with my problem and we had that engine tore all the way down and back together twice and the problem did not go away till i had the injection pump rebuilt by the I H industral dealer as they had one of the best pump men anywhere around . He took his time and showed me the ins and out with that old style pump . And with out me checking your tractor out myself this is the best i can give ya on the could be's .

It is a Typo. the real word is Pre chamber cup. a liner in the precombustion chamber. JimN

Sounds like one of the starting valves is stuck open.

when it is missing is it always the same cylinder or does it jump around. The injectors may be bad (not opening at the right pressure or bad spray pattern) My 47 MD has a miss when it starts on diesel also but it clears up after a minute or two. My nozzle spray isn't the best but they open at the correct pressure.

If it was a sticking valve causing the miss it should start to burn the valve after a few warm up cycles like that and then it would keep missing. Could you be down on compression in one hole and it has to warm up before it hits? Does it behave the same if you get it good and warm on gas, and does it hit on all four on gas?

Oh yeah, if it sits around a lot but is in otherwise good condition, some real excersize might do it a lot of good.

Went down and started the tractor again tonight. It doesn't miss or run rough on gas. Switching over to diesel it smoked and ran a little rough for 30 sec, then sputtered for a few seconds then runs perfectly, no smoke, no loss of power. Last night I had to run it for 15 min before it sputtered and began to run right. Bleeding the injectors makes no difference, so I don't think the problem is in one injector. Also if the head was cracked or cracked sleeve it should smoke white all the time. I think a sticking stating valve makes sense. Is there any way to fix this short of pulling off the head? Would an additive to the oil or fuel help? Or does the tractor just need to be run more?

When the tractor is stone cold, (and would do the missfire routine if stsrted) Do this before cranking. Put it into diesel run mode with the lever, then put it into gas mode as though you were going to start it. Then back into diesel mode. THen remove the valve cover and look at the compression release valves. If one of them is way loose, or even .020 looser than spec, I would suspect a sticking valve (that one) If they are all near correct, I sustect a prechamber crack, or an injector with a bad pattern, or low compression on that cylinder. Good luck, JimN
