I am posting here and in the engine section. Finally figured out how to post pictures. It is marked: "International Harvester 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 HP srial number LAA64461". It has a reduction type gear box on the rear. I have found a few pictures of these engines, but not one with this gear box. What was this engine used for, and when was it made? I have other pictures of it to veiw if it would help. Thanks.

The engine has a direct-coupled pumpjack. The slotted holes between the wheels are to attach it to the well pumping head, likely with "U" bolts.

Hi Bob. So would this be considered an oil field engine like I have heard about? Do you know when it was made? Thanks.

At 1-1/2 HP, I'm sure it would be considered a farm (water) pumping engine.

No, this is not an oil field engine. It is an engine to be put on a well to pump water. Oil field engines are 100 times bigger than this little bitty engine. The pegs on each wheel has wooden rods on them that hook to the water well pump handle and is used out where you need a large amount of water, you start it up and let it pump.

Thanks for the info. I guess that is why it has a reduction gear set up on it. Is this a common configuration for the LAA engines?

No, this is a special application for the LA and LB series engines. Most had a belt pulley and a few had chain sprockets on them for running miscellanous driven implments. The LAA was a 1-11/2hp engine the LAB was a 3-5hp, then in later years they made an LBA it was a 1-11/2hp engine and the LBB was the 3-5hp engine. They are not a hit n miss type igntion, they are a throttle governed engine. If you are planning on doing anything with it, you can get a lot of info from hitnmiss enterprises, they have books and parts for them.

Hi Jt. It also has a belt pulley on the other side. I mess with saving old Farmall, and other tractors and equipment, as a hobby. I do not collect anything really. Just try to keep them out of the hands of the scrap metal dealers, to save them for the folks that like to restore them. That is where this Ih stationary engine came from. Bought it at an auction of old junk, saved it for a collector or user.
