I have seen several photos of old M's painted with white paint on the center part of the grill and lower part of the hood below the curving rib. I am thinking this was an IH dealer repaint intended to make the tractor look like the then-newer 460/560. Does any one have any info on this? I would like to paint one of my M's this way as a '1950's-era repaint'.

Reprints of some original 1939 IH magazine adds show Ms with white or silver stripe grilles. Some say the striped grilles were prototype tractors and were not continued in actual production

ots of guys did it themselves. THe M&W sales literature for the accessories show the M&W owned tractors with that red and white paint job, that would be the only organized folks I know of- they also had some M&W decals put on the demonstrator tractors.

As Dave says, there was no organized repaint program. There were many more all red repaints, the red/white was a dealer thing. Only my opinion, and you can do as you want, but I think a red and white letter series looks weird. The closest IH came to that was the red/white scheme on the International 650 the successor to the 600 which replaced the 9 series. It did not get the new hood like the other 00/50 series did. It has a white grill insert, and white behind the International, above the lip, from the rear of the hood to the top of the curve. It looks fine, but IH actually did them that way.

Trivial detail here, and I know what you meant, but actually the 600/650 series DID get a "new" hood that was different than the 9 series tractors. The 9's had their guages mounted under a "bump" in the rear center of the hood like the H's and M's. On the 600/650's, the guages were moved to an insturment panel that attached to the steering column, and the hood tops were flat.

They still did, however, have that raised rib on 'em.

Could be, I have been close to very few standard or wheatland tractors, so at first glance the hood looks the same as does not cover the gas tank as the International 400, etc, do. The only pictures I have seen are in Guy Fay's hundred series book, or I would not have known that.

I never heard of any organized red/white repaint program, but I've seen a lot of older tractors that got the 350-450 red/white paint scheme. Especially 300's & 400's. It was a way to make a tractor look more up to date.

Repainting tractors was used by many dealers as a way to keep the shop busy when new tractor sales were slow. I've seen some old advertising literature from IH promoting it.

It's your tractor, paint it to suit how you want it to look.

Oh heck yeah,

Back in the early fifties, lots of farmers got a paint job in the spring along with their yearly tune up. Kind of a ritual.
