Hi guys, just wanted to share something with you. Today, August 3, marks the 3rd anniversary of my son's death. At the age of 2 and 1/2 he was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Up until that time, he was a normal, healthy boy, with normal development and growth. He was just short of 5 years old when he passed away three years ago. Today, my wife and I drove from northern IL to SE IA to visit the cemetery. He's buried in a little country cemetery just a few hundred yards from where I grew up and my familys 7 generation family farm. He was our only child, and a great little man. He loved old tractors (well, any tractors for that matter) as much as I do. In fact, on the memorial at the cemetery there's a picture etched in the stone of a 1943 JD B, taken from the real thing, the first tractor ever on our farm, and restored by myself and friends for my son. For the last year of his life, we'd get that old tractor out and drive it up and down the streets in our neighborhood. I'd never trade the smile I got from him when we'd fire her up and go for a spin. His memory is carried on in several ways in my life, tractor restoration is one of them. I'm restoring a Farmall B from our family farm at the present time. You guys on this forum have been a great resource and help to me in these restoration projects, and also very therapeutic for me. I just wanted to say thank you for helping me have an outlet for my grief. You folks are great people. After a long day of work, I faithfully log onto this site and check out the discussion and photo ads section. It helps me occupy my mind and enjoy a great hobby, and remember some of the great times I shared with my son in his short life.
Thanks
DJL

And to think I was torqued yesterday because of gasoline prices! Thanks for putting things back in perspective.

I know how you feel. I lost my first wife and son to a drunk driver. As a kid we do some things we shouldnt have been and at 18 I was married with because my son was coming.2 months later he was here. When he was about a month and a half old, he had gotten sick, so my wife was taking him to the doctor when the ywere stuck by a low life scum bag so drunk he didnt know what had happened. All things happen for a reason and only one man has control over that. I miss them both but had that not happened I would not have the wonderful wife and 2 sons I have know. In fact,my youngest one is his namesake.

DJL,

My prayers are with you. 5 years ago, I lost my oldest son, just before his 18TH birthday. (He was a John Deere toy collector, perhaps not by choice, as he was not able to talk or communicate, but he seemed to enjoy the bright colors when we would help him "play" with them, as well as music.)

He suffered severe bain damage from a medical error at birth, and needed total care all his life. He also is buried in a small rural cemetary, just a couple of miles from our farm, where my Grandfather settled before ND became a state, with my great grandmother, my grandparents, my parents, and my uncles.

My younger son and I "visited" them all yesterday, also.

Lots of memories there!

THank you for that touching story. I know it's a sad day to remember, but I really appreciate how you remember his smile. I'm a father of two small boys myself. My oldest is 6, and my youngest turns 2 on Saturday. I'm in the Navy, and when I was deployed, it was thier smile that I always remembered, and I do all I can to bring it out of them every day. It sounds like you did the same for you son, and I'm sure he appreciated every moment of the time he spent with his terrific father.

God bless!

Mike

I have a son in the Army...but he is a whole 30 !!
He has to leave in Oct. back to Iraq again..a good farm kid with all kinds of mechanical talents, and I and mom worry for him !
We need to think of you all who are in the military, and pray for things to somehow get better.
How sad it is for our youth to face, and be in harm"s way.
The little kids of theirs will miss their daddy, and it is another sad day I can think of.
But, the loss of a child is truly the saddest, I pray for you all who suffer this, to try to stay strong with your families.
