I am restoring my B.The front steering unit had grease in it.The book said use 90 wt oil. Took out the grease, what fun!!! Now with 90 wt, it leaks a little, all bolts are tight. Checked my Super M, grease in it too!!! Did the old farmers use grease instead of 90 wt oil in the front steering units?? Is grease ok?,or a real heavy oil?? Any ideas?? Thanks, Steve

I hear this all the time on the forum about putting grease in the steering gearboxes. I have replaced seals and bearings in at least six tractors (A, B, Super C, H, Super H, MD) over the last few years and never had one leak after filling with 90 weight gear oil except the H which had a bent shaft that I replaced and then it didn't leak either. The seal is probably bad and needs replacing as none of mine leak after replacing seal and gaskets and filling with 90wt.

Another easy to find grease is graphite based Ford specification chassis grease. Black as night, but is slippery. JimN

The steering gear boxes in these old tractors are so apt to leak, that most of us have gone to a grease since it will not leak out like 90 wt. But, you can get a grease that is too thick and won't lube the parts like it should. The best grease I have found for both old tractor and old car is cornhead grease. Someone on this site put me onto it. While it is a grease, it is a very "wet" grease, which is what you need in a steering box so that it will "mush around" as you turn the wheel back and forth during operation. You can get cornhead grease at most tractor dealerships. mike

I replaced the seals and brass shims on my Farmall A gear box and after a week, it started to leak again. So what did I do, put grease in it like most people do. If I would have put the grease in before I replaced the seals, I could have saved 50 bucks. Lesson learned. Good Luck,
Charles
