Just got done putting new points, plugs, wires, coil etc...what is the correct method of setting timing on the '67 706 with 291, but with a distributor from a 50-early 60's 706 with the points that arent offset. What rpm and degrees to set to? Also if this is a 12 volt system (alternator) with a 12 volt coil why do they use a resistor in front of the coil?
One last question, looking at the manifold should the heat riser valve arm be toward the front of the tractor when warmed up or the rear. Thanks for any replies!

Well the correct way for a 291 is that you set at full throttel and for no more then 20 degrees advance useing 93 octain gas and that is with the correct dist for the tractor as for you if it is not the correct dist. then you may have problems as the 706's are a bit fussy on there timeing and if ya get it wrong it can sezze a piston . The timeing curve is differant on the 263 dist then the 291 as the 291 can not take a bunch of advance timeing .

Yeah,

I think they gotta be set just about right on the money too.

I got my old tractor hottern' Billy Fire yesterday 'cause I had the timing set too darned slow and it would heat under load.

I bumped 'er up by ear and it seemed to straighten it out, but it still kind of worries me a little. 'Spose I should put a light on 'er?

Yep, they have to be dead on , now on the 291 it realy is suppose to be at 18 but you can go to 20 and no more on the gas of today even with the 93 octain when ya could get 95 you could go to 24 with out swelling the top of the pistons and that was back when ya could get a Fordged piston now today all ya get is a CAST piston they will not get rid of the heat as fast and swell a bunch more BTDT . So if ya don't want funny littel lines running up and down your cylinder walls set the timeing at what i told ya and run the 93 as it burns cooler and burns longer less sooting of the plugs and less combustion heat and more useable power .
