I am looking to buy an industrial IH Compact Hydrostatic Loader tractor. I am searching for the year this tractor was made. The tractor was made in London, England. This is a 3 cylinder D179 diesel. It is yellow and cream colored. Serial # 2230155B101120-X. I would appreciate any additional information regarding this tractor, especially related to the year.

I see now that I read the serial number list cross eyed. That machine would be a 1980. The year is not encoded in the serial number but rather is done by a list of starting numbers for each tear. The 240A was only built in 1978,79,and 1980. 1978 serial numbers started at #100001, 1979 started at #100279 and 1980 started at #100709. The actual serial number is the number after the "B" in the complete identification number.
Depending on where you are located, the 484 should be quite common. The Hydro 84 is not as common althogh not really rare. The problem with a hydro is they are VERY,VERY expensive to fix if you have a major internal problem. The Hydro 84 uses hand controls and the foot control system was only on the industrials. My understanding is that IH dropped the industrial wheel division about 1980 and then shortly after that sold the crwaler and construction division to Dresser. Most parts you might need should be available from a CaseIH dealer but you need a partsman that can and will take the time to understand the 240A in relation to the Agricultural models from that era and then match it up for you.

I believe what you have is actually a 240A industrial tractor. By serial number, it is a 1978. It is more or less the same tractor as the agricultural 484 tractor. If in fact, it has the hydtostatic transmission as you said, the transmission parts would be basically the same as the ag Hydro84. There was also a torque converter transmission option that was unique to the late industrial wheel tractors of the late seventies to the end of production in about 1980 or so. That unit is a little harder to find parts for.

Hello Big Don, I really appreciate the information. This site is very, very helpful. You are correct, it is a 240A industrial tractor. I found out that PL means power loader. What I would like to know is how you get that date out of that serial #. Also, I do have a hydrostatic transmission, 2 foot pedals left side. Were the Hydro84 and agricultural 484 rare tractors? I would appreciate any additional information that you may have.

Your IH "I-240 PL" was made at the IH Plant in Doncaster, England. The motor "D179" was made at the IH Plant in Neuss, Germany. You may have to contact someone in England - to date the year of production.

Regards, Milton
