Freeman Loaders: any good?

Considering driving to look at an International 584 tomorrow but it has a Freeman Loader. Most of what I've seen so far in archives, etc., suggest to me that they were not that well built, are out of business, and parts coule be a problem. Frankly, I'm wondering if I should cancell tomorrow based on the Freeman. Do I have all this wrong?

We had a Freeman on a IH 300U years ago. It took everything the 300U could give it, but it wasn't a particularly robust unit.

Freeman eventually became part of Bush Hog. I have a 1975 vintage Bush Hog Freeman 2000 loader on a Super M, and it is one tough loader. 30+ years of use and abuse with only minor repairs. My Dad used to do things with it that made me cringe, but it survived.

Like others have said, most cases of complaints about a loader not being well built are really the result of the operator believing he has a bulldozer, and abusing the equipment. You'll see similar numbers of similar complaints for every brand out there if you look.

For the parts aspect, the loader is mostly simple generic parts. If you've got a welder and a torch, or access to them, you can fix pretty much anything that goes wrong with the loader. The cylinders could prove to be tough to find parts for, but worst case you can replace with a generic unit.

Dennis: I've never owned a Freeman loader, in fact have only seen them on 30-40 hp tractors. The reputation for them, I've heard is much the same as you are already getting. I don't know if Freeman built more than one loader as in light or heavy duty.

With all due respects to K.B., if that Freeman is same as any I've seen, it definitely never hurt the 584 even if he bulldozed trees, unless of course loader bucket is somewhere under the oil pan. Personally I'd go take a look, the Freeman, even in good shape will not add much value. You may just get yourself one hell of a good 584. If he is the original owner and has lived 25+ years with the Freeman, he is definitely a gentle man.

I'd suggest looking at the tractor, and evaluate the loader seperatly. Ask them if they're willing to sell without the loader. I've never been around Freeman loaders, but in general, even the cheaper-built aftermarket loaders will not break unless abused. If the loader is all busted up, that should also tell you something about the way the tractor has been used. Remember, a loader is meant for lifting, light snow/dirt/gravel/manure scraping, and very light digging. They are not meant for pushing over buildings or ramming into tree stumps. If you decide to buy the tractor without the loader, look around for an IH 2250 or Case-IH 2255 loader. Thousands of them are out there, the trick is to find the correct mounts for your specific tractor. Check with a Case-IH dealer, you may be able to buy a 2255 new yet.

Thanks. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to see the darned tractor; it's about a 120 miles from me and timing is poor. I agree about the CaseIH loaders. I had just a IH2200 loader on my 485 and at least it was sound and I took really good care of it. A 2250 would be even better. I didn't start out looking for a 584, it just turned up on the list with the loader. Maybe I'll ask the local salesman if they'd sell it without the loader. Dennis
