Bought an old IH 1100 balanced head mower. It has been sitting out side for years without a cap on hole for the grease zert on the head. How much grease does this thing take? It's not frozen and turns easily but I plan on using it lightly until I can work the rust out. Is there a manual listing link?

The book says 30 hours on the top plug zerk, and occasional on the bottom plug. Sticker on my mower says 100 hours on top and bottom plug. Who knows? Just don't over grease it!

Which zerk are you talking about??

The head pin that moves back and forth can be greased as much as you want. I try to grease mine every hour, as there is no seal on it to hold the grease in it.

As for the internal grease zerks inside the actual mechanism (mine has 2 plugs, each has a zerk behind it) one on top and one in the front. Those are to be greased about 4 to 5 shots every 100 hours. Overgreasing the internal bearings will destroy them. Same deal with the rear zerk on the balanced head.

Pivot points can be greased as much as you want. I have a manual for my 1110, if you email me I can run off some copies of the pertinent information and mail it to ya!

Danny The norm was to not over grease and blow the seals. The big thing with the balanced head mower most people did not heed was running them to fast. Get a tach and check you PTO RPM and do not run over 540 if it is a 540 or not over 1000 if it is a 1000 RPM mower. Over run RPM is bad for them, they will run long time if run right.

Its running on an "H" so I doubt that it will ever get much above the 540 PTO speed. How many "pumps" does it take to blow the seals? Every time a I use it been giving it a about two - three pumps and its only seeing about 20 minutes to an hour use before being set aside. Come next spring it might start seeing 4-8 hours use at a time as I will be haying some CRP that's coming out of contract.

Check your PTO with a tach - my H PTO runs 600 rpm at full throttle.

See my post above explaining which zerks not to over grease.

I have a manual for the 1000 mower. It was published and distributed by "IHC Printing and Distribution Services" 807 Blackhawk Dr Westmont IL 60559

Bet your local dealer can get you one.

You can pretty much give it as much grease as you want, nothing to hurt by over greasing. Check the head temp after running if for a awhile. Warm to the touch is normal, too hot to touch, something is giving too much friction.
