Super H won't idle down

I bought a Super H with a stuck engine. I rebuilt the engine and the carb. It started on the second crank, and runs GREAT. However, I can"t get it to idel down. It only comes down to maybe 800-1000 RPM. I checked, double checked, and TRIPPLE checked the carb settings, governor settings, throdle linkage, and the carb to governor linkage. I have no idea what the previous owner might have done. Any ideas???

Thanks,
Leo

Did you remove the throttle plate when you cleaned/ overhauled the carb? Our SMTA was overhauled many years ago, at the local dealership, & the carb was rebuilt at the same time by the mechanic. We got it home & it never idled down similar to what yours sounds like. After putting up with this for too long, I took the carb off, & looked it over. The mechanic had gotten the throttle plate in upside down. The upshot was that the throttle plate had to be turned over. A throttle plate is beveled on the edges which meet the inside bore of the carb. When the throttle plate was reversed, it couldn't "seal off" the air/ mixture at low idle, so the engine wouldn't idle down. Worth a look.

You were on the right track. I knew the thottle plate was not idiot proof when I put it together, and was VERY careful to put it in the correct way. I took the carb apart again today and saw a small gap where the plate was not fitting correctly when in the idle position.I took it out and reversed it to make sure I had it in the correct position. I did. HOWEVER, it was not properly aligned for whatever reason (assembled in dimly lit barn?) When I re-assembled the plate as I had originally had it, the plate aligned propperly as I tightened the screws. The plate closed properly. I reassembleed the carb, put it on,and she idled down just like she should. I still don"t see why the plate didn"t align when I tightened the screws originally, but she works fine now. Thanks, Leo

Is the idle stop on the carb set too fast? Can you move the throttle linkage toward idle with your hand(careful not to get fingers in the fan belt) to get it to idle slower? An engine that is running lean(starved for fuel) will run fast. Ever notice that just before you run out of gas your mower, chain saw, etc will rev up. Good luck. Dave.
