What was the belt pully made out of?

I've seen a couple of belt pullies, but never touched one. What were they made from? Some are brown, so I think wood. Some are grey, so I think some type of resin. Some are black, so I think the are wood or resign and have been marked up. Maybe they have a rubber coating?

Basically, I want to get one and make it look new, like it's never been used. If it was wood that would look real nice with a fresh stain on it.

Most on the bigger tractors are leather and can be painted ot varnnish (not a good idea because varnish will get old fast and peel off). I use black shoe polish on my M. use past wax and then turn it on and polish with a cloth. Tried liquid and it orks also paste better

I think you'll find it is really paper, not leather.

what varnish should I use on paper pulley in reply to Mike CA, 08-14-2006 14:13:38

what exact varnish has been successfully used on these, as I wish to salvage mine from drying and crumbling more than it has already.

I just use an exterior spar varnish and let it soak in to the paper. It will help bind things together.

On the one's I use, I put a little used motor oil on them, and it soaks in pretty well. It is good if they sit outside all year.

Good luck on that one... They're in the business of rebuilding pulleys, so the chances of them having a "defective" pulley in stock that even looks like a pulley... ain't good :(

Keep your eyes open. You'll find what you're looking for. I picked one up on ebay pretty cheap about a year ago. Dunno what's wrong with it, but nobody else bid on it.

Respond well to varnish? Does that mean it restores their look, or helps their usefullness?

I'd very much like to know how they came out of the factory.

I bought a new one in a IH crate. The gear box is a right angle PTO adaptor for a 504 and similar tractors. The nailed on pulley bezel was painted red. I think the nails were red too. The fiber pulley surface was oiled and had a brown color. I would have to take another look, but I don't think it was turned in a lathe. In other words, it is slightly uneven. Variations no more than 005-010".

On a H or M, one has to wonder if the pulley was installed on the tractor prior to painting. I am guessing it wasn't. I think it was installed with the lights, decals, and so on.

If you have sound pulley, you could rotate the pulley by putting it in gear and holding sand paper against it. Use something like a 36 grit. That's about as close as you are going to get to original appearance.

A lot of old timers protected them by pouring oil on them.

I guess I really don't know how they came from the factory but they painted everything else like ignition wires.

There is a picture of what appears to be new H on cover of Guy Fays IH Tractor Data Book. The pulley on this tractor does not show any sign of paint on paper part and metal is painted Red.

If they are not steel, they are laminated paper as Haas says. The paper is cut the same size as the end plate and there are a LOT of sheets. They are very durable and respond well to varnish.

From the factory, of course, they were painted.
Red maybe. Like the rest of the tractor.

I have the same confusion. Have steel pulley from an H, but also have another pulley from an H that appears to be made out if wood. Is this what is referred to as a "paper" pulley. Any photo links or such would clear this up.

Most of them are laminated paper. There is a company in Columbia, Tennessee that rebuilds them. Not cheap though. Some of the pulleys are cast iron or cast steel, but the majority of the old flat belt pulleys are the laminated paper.
