Charlie, it sounds like the VR may have a loose connection or a poor ground or else one of its relay contacts is burned or carboned up or sticking. The first thing I would do is remove n clean n wire brush and reattach each of its connections,,,,, next check n clean the VR's frame ground connection to the gennys case (if thats where it mounts),,,,, ,,if that dont cure it you might try n remove the cover and NON ABRASIVELY clean/buff/polish lightly the relay contacts in case they are burned or carboned over. You gotta be careful in abrasivley filing or grinding off too much of the silvery coating on any relay contacts cuz then they may go bad. If shes not charging when running but does if you temporarily dead ground the gennys field post to the case, then I suspect either a bad field current control relay/contacts in the VR or else the VR isnt well grounded to the genny or else the wires bad from FLD on the VR to the gennys Field post. If she charges ONLY if you momentarily jump the VR's BAT terminal over to its ARM/GEN terminal, then I suspect the VR's Cutout Relay/Contacts are bad. If either dead grounding the gennys Field post or jumping the VR's BAT and ARM/GEN makes her charge, that tells me the genny is okay and its more likely a bad ground (VR to genny) or a bad VR (relay) or a wiring or connection problem Try this n post back your findings and any questions, best wishes n God Bless John T
