I took my woods belly mower off to get some needed repair work done. I started my cub tractor to move it. I noticed that when I reved engine all the way open, governor did not take over for over run. When I slowed engine down all the way, governor did kick in. Did this a number of times to be sure this was happening. What is the problem here? What can I do to correct problem so engine will not over run? Could governor be getting stuck.

Set the hand throttle aobut 1/3 way forward and check for play in linkage to carb. It should have resistance no matter which way you move it. if not, check the cross arm that goes across radiator to governeor. It has a key in it where it goes to spring arm on govenror. For the endo fo rod to become worn is ccoomon. It can be built up by using shim stock (soda can works good), or using loctite to holed it, or as in the case of my 48, both.

Don't know as to what is realy going on and for starters get the book out and go thru the linkage adjustments and if this does not help or fix the problem then there is a problem inside the governer as to maybe the thrust bearing may have come apart or flyweights may be woren and sticking May be BIg DOG will get on here as he is the local GURU on the cubs as i have worked on a few but not enough to be the expert as i have to use the book.

I went to manual for governor adjustment. To adjust gov. (engine stopped) place speed control change lever in wide open position and remove pin from rockerarm and carburetor throttle rod. Holding rockerarm and carb throttle rod as far toward carb as they will go. If pin doesn not slide in freely adjust rod. Pin did not go in beause rod was to long by 1/4". Shortened rod till pin went in freely. Started tractor. No more over run. Old tractor is running very smoothly. Don't now RPM don't have meter to read, but it sounds better than it did before I had this problem. Before problem occured I did nothing to tractor except change spark plugs. points, condensor, new belts, and a new radiator and cleaned out lower radiator tank which was full of gunk from all these years of neglect. (Any thing else do I neeed to do?) Still have no clue what caused governor to ack that way after all these years. Thanks for all the comments and help.
