Brand new belt pulley?

Someone gave me a link to www.paperpulleys.com I contacted them and asked how much and military discount (why not, right?) So, they sell a new pulley for an H for $165, and military gets them shipped for free.

My question is: I have a pulley on the parts tractor. It looks it's age, so I don't know if it will be restorable to "HOLY CRAP THAT TRACTOR IS AWESOME" show condition. So maybe new is the way to go. What do you guys think?

I bought 2 pullys at auction, one steel & one was paper, $5.00 ea.

Have you thought about buying a steel pulley instead of the paper? If you plan on using the pulley, I am more of a fan of the paper type since they seem to have less belt slippage...but if it's just for looks, steel is the low maintenance way to go! They are not hard to find. I picked one up last weekend for $50 without so much as a scratch in it...a little bit of paint and it looks like new.

I have never seen a metal one on a tractor. In fact, i don't even think my Grandfather had one on his tractor. But I like the off-set color of the tan with the red, which is why I was thinking of getting a new paper pulley. But I will keep an eye out for a metal pulley as well and compare the look.

I agree with you, I think the offset color of the paper pulleys does add a bit of character to any tractor. The picture I posted actually is one that is being auctioned on eBay, I thought I would grab ya the picture just for reference. Either way you go...I'm sure it will look good on your H.

Mike, I have seen paper belt pulleys that look like new in the salvage yards, I have seen others totally disintegrated and blowing in the wind like a rag. If the pulley had been used lots and tar belt dressing used on it , the belt dressing seemed to coat and protect them. One of my H's was seldom stored inside and yet the belt pulley is as new. I'd check wrecking yards, you might be surprised! If you can't find a pulley close to you let me know, I can find one, only problem is freight from Ontario to California...but I'm sure you will find one close to home when you get looking...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Don"t forget that there are as many without pulleys as with. Try to make a list of things to do, starting with the most important first. Pulleys would be way down on list. Enjoy your H.

There are a lot of tractors around wih the belt pulley attachment but no pulley. They look really good. the pulley gets taken off and stored in a shed then the old man dies and the junk gets sold at auction. The tractor and pulley never see each other again but both have happy lives. They can be in the way if you are not using them.

I agree with the others: low priority.

Quite often the pulleys that got stored away in a shed became a source of nesting material for the rats and mice. I've seen a number of them at estate auctions that were totally chewed up beyond use.

I paid $55 for a steel one last year at a salvage yard in Nebraska. Mike, you make want to find a good salvage yard near you or on your way to a popular destination - it can make going to the inlaws more desireable.

If a tight budget is a factor, why not wait until the tractor is otherwise done before buying a pulley? In the meantime, maybe one will come your way at a very good price....?

One Hundred and Sixty Five Bucks!? Seems kind of pricey . . . you should be able to get a GOOD replacement (used) for about 1/4 of that!
