Was driving wonderful backroads this a.m. taking my dad out of the nursing home for breakfast and made an interesting find. Stopped and inquired about a tractor and was directed around the building to an International 340 Utility. Good/complete sheet metal, sound rims, fast hitch, trip-bucket loader, power steering. Think I better take a trip back and give it a better "look-see". Any idea if they have any inherent problems; number produced, etc. Thanks you in advance.

Hi Al,

I've had my IH-340U WF with a original Pippin loader/hoe for about 10yrs. Everyone that I've seen since has always looked like it was rode real hard a put away wet.

It must be from people just thinking there cheap so use them and not maintain them then throw'm away when your done.

A typical 35hp tractor from what I've seen.

The 340 Utility gas is right around 35 horsepower, and weighs a good 4500 pounds without any weights etc. on it. There were right around 12,000 International 340s, and 7,000 Farmall 340 row crops.

Watch out for worn steering and front axle wear from the loader.

Stopped along I-81 in southern PA today, to look at some used IHs a guy has out for sale. He reconditions IH tractors, paints-up the better examples (mostly collectible Farmalls like Hs and Ms, or big diesels for working tractors) and does a fairly good trade in refurbished IH tractors.

One of my northern tier dairy farmer cousins has bought two reconditioned/repainted IH diesels from the guy over the past 8 or 10 years and is happy with them.

He had a fairly rough-looking 340 utility out on the hill today, that he wanted $2500 for. No loader, but he said everything works fine including the TA. It's just ugly and apparently not enough profit incentive to make it purty, like the bigger tractors he has for sale. Did have a new seat and battery, otherwise original.

I have a Farmall 340. If this gas, they have about 35 horsepower. They made a total of between 7,000 and 8,000 Farmall and International 340s together, so some parts hard to come by, but they can be gotten with patience. I think it is much more of a tractor than, for example, a Ford 8N, but not too much of a tractor for a small acreage. So much depends on condition. Check the power steering and hydraulics carefully. Also check oil pressure and make sure not smoking. Make sure the Torque Amplifier works in high and low. Kind of the usual things to check. It is a forty, plus year old tractor but will have decent hydraulics and live pto. Some possibility it may have been abused with loader on it, so look for cracks on the front end. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
