Anyone have a idea as to why my F20 over heats? Tractor had a new radiator installed. Gaskets and new hoses installed. Engine was not tight, however, I had the head off an inspected no problems noted, and new gaskets installed. Engine satarts and runs fine. After running for 15 minutes steam is coming out top of radiator, however, the lower radiator hose coming from base of radiator to engine block is cool to the touch...

Nobody mentioned checking the fan belt. The thermosiphon won't work if you can't cool the water. Had a similar problem on my Regular, turned out to be a loose fan belt, fan wasn't moving enough air. Tightened the fan belt, ran it for a couple hours, no steam.

Other replies are all good but not mentioned, might be an air lock in not letting the water circulate, did you have block drain open and refill till water was comming out and then close block drain as the water was flowing then finnish filling the radiator. That should make it so there is no pocket of air left in engine to keep the water from circulating (This is with every type of cooling system, thermosyphen or water pump. some systems even have a seperate bleed screw because of that problem), that pocket of air will cause the steam like that and there should be no steam at any time in running. Also a anti freeze mix will not circulate as easy as water and will cause steem when water will not even tho the antifreeze mix has a higher boiling point than water. Found out about the antifreeze on my JD with thermosyphen system when we put a mounted picker on, never boild before with anti freeze till picker then you couldnot seepicker for steam, took out antifreeze and refilled with water and no more steam. Used picker only part of season as picker went bad, in all years since no more boiling with antifreeze. Also on a different JD, same system when 4 tube radiator whent bad was replaced with a 3 tube (same gallons) and overheated, then had to ad the water pump, the bigger tubes would not release the heat fast enough without positive circulation. Check for that air pocket.

When the radiator is completely full do you notice bubbles while it is running. If so exhaust gasses may be leaking into your coolent through a crack in the head or gasket. If not, they run hot on top cool on bottom normaly.

Sounds about normal to me too. You can usually see if the water is circulating in the top of the radiator. If the water is circulating and you are cold on the bottom, I'd say you are fine. Running lean or late ignition timing will make them want to run hot. Bill

+Did it do this before? That thermo-syphon system runs hot atthe top, and the bottom will not be hot under normal circunstances. My Cub ahs the same type of cooling system, and I put a thermometer in the top of the rad. to see how hot it got. Went up to 190+ real quick. That's what makes them work, Hot water rises (in the engine)and cool water falls, (in the radiator) If a little steam comes out the top, don't worry about it. One other thing, if you put anti-freeze in it, pre-mix it before pouring it in. If you don't it won't circulate and will overheat. These systems will work good if kept full of colant, but won't if you let the coolant get too low .

Thats pretty much normal for those older tractors with no waterpump. I have a regular farmall that will do the same thing. As the engine runs the warm water rises and flows through the top hose to the top of the radiator, as the water cools it settles to the bottom of the radiator and back into the engine block. That is why the top of the radiator will be warmer than the bottom. Technically its called thermosiphon.
