Having trouble getting the axle locks loose. Jacked it up, used 1" impact got bolt loose, inside wedge moves can't get the outside free. She slid all the way in-think it had doubles on all it's life. Does anyone know of a tool or an idea of how to break free. Need to slide out to fit wind rows. Thanks Chris-New York

You need a wedge lock tool like Hugh describes. There is no way on God's green earth you'll ever get both wedges loose without it. Once you have the tool, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

pete: Get an IH operators manual, wheel adjustment is part of operating adjustments and will be covered in the operators manual. Binder Books will have reproductions of the 1456 operators manual.

Keep the IT manual it does have some useful info but they omit some things.

It's time you had a manual. Those are quite simple but you must have the proper tool to loosen them. There is two U shaped irons that clamp on the wheel, by use of two bolt going through beside wedges. When the wedge that loosens first comes up against clamp, that forces second wedge loose. Those wedges are tightened to 600 ft lbs when put on. Using hammers will only damage bearings, and never loosen wedge if tightened properly in the beginning.

Pete they made 2 dog bones to lay in the hub so 1 lock could not move with out the other. With out them I would bring the in side lock back snug then drive the tractor slow and use that brake to see it that helps.
