Restoration/Preservation of Belt Pulley

Just purchased a Belt Pulley for the "H". Is there anything I can do to protect and restore the compost paper. Its in good shape right now, but I want to do more in the preservation of this part. I do plan on using it run a cord saw this fall.

If the pulley will be used to power a cord saw, you do not want to apply any kind of paint, oil, or varnish. The best thing you can do is keep it in a dry place when it is not being used, and make sure that the rats and mice cannot get to it. The belt dressing that is used to make the belt grip better will be the best preservative you can use.

That is a real good point about rodents. I had some mice eat a big hole in my Super H pulley when I had it off the tractor on the bench over the winter. I don't know why they want to chew on something like that, but they did. Roger

Where do you get this belt dressing??? What do I ask for?? I do want to be able to use the belt pulley to run the cord saw...

I use leftover sorghum syrup from previous years cooking. Probably one of the best belt dressings I've ever used. Plus as a bonus, it makes the belt smell nice :)

Ask at an auto parts store for "Permatex Belt Dressing", Item# PTX80073. They should be able to order it if they don't carry it in stock.

I really don't know. Used to be you could get it at most any farm supply store, but I haven't seen any for years.

Keep it off the tractor and stored in a safe place.

You can also use belt dressing on the belt which will help preserve the pulley too.

I've used spar varnish and seen others use used motor oil, all with good results.
