I"m new to this site so this maybe a question that has been asked often. I bought a 52 Super M and the stearing is loose ! How do i tighten it up , the manual does"t even show the workings of these parts ? Is there a adjustment for slack like in a stearing box of a car? It has the crop roe front on it .

Thank You Jim

Jim -

Andy pretty well sums up the possible causes. And generally it’s a combination of several of these that result in sloppy steering. A couple more things to add to Andy’s comments:

1 - If the worm gear is a full 360 deg type and the teeth are worn in the area where they contact the steering shaft worm, removing the gear and reinstalling it rotated 180 deg will present unworn teeth to the worm. However if has a sector type (“half moon”) gear the gear cannot be rotated.

2 - A worn lower bolster bushing does not affect steering wobble very much. However steering tightness is VERY sensitive to a worn upper bushing and/or pivot shaft. Any discernable fore and aft movement at the top end of the pivot shaft is a bad thing.

Not a big deal to replace the upper bushing and a new one is inexpensive. However you must disassemble the steering mechanism and drop the pivot shaft to get at it.

Punch below for a look inside the steering a Super H. The Super M is essentially identical...

Jim:

The question has been asked many times because it is a common problem.

There is no adjustment however there are some easy things to check.

First make sure the u-joint is tight. Sometimes the clamp on the front of the u-joint is sliding with a worn key in the keyway.

As you turn the wheel, does it move forward and back? If so, the bearing may be loose in the steering gearbox. To get to the bearing, you have to pull the grill off. Then take the big nut off the front at the top of the gearbox. Check the bearing inside. If it is bad replacing it will help.

While you have the grill off pull the top off the gearbox and see if the worm gear and sector gear have excessive backlash. If the gears are tight but the sector gear moves front to back as the steering wheel is wiggled the the top bolster bearing is bad.

Then jack the tractor up and try to move the front wheels side to side. If they move much the lower bolster bearing is bad. Both teh upper and lower bolster bearings are a little tough to change so you have to decide if you can live with the looseness in the steering.

Good luck!
