I'm looking for some help on a 856 we use for plowing and hay cutting. It has the DT407 engine and we ran it for years with a bad injector pump. It would lope at idle and never really smooth out. We replaced the pump back in the spring and the lope is gone and it runs a lot smoother, but it still isn't perfectly smooth. After bringing the rpms up to pto speed you can still hear a little flutter in the exhaust, which is a straight pipe. I would like to know if this is normal. We have double checked the pump timing and tried running it advanced and retarded a little, but it makes no difference. My dad and I are thinking we should check the valve adjustment and posible have the injectors replaced or checked next. I would appreciate any other opinions on this. Thanks.

Like others have said run the valves but it will be just about like my old junky 806 with 8700 hours on her it had a kakel at the high end and i also figured valve adjust so last fall wright before we put her on the bagger i ran the valves had a couple that were out a couple thousant nothing major well that did not help but it put my mind at ease what did help and the Kakel is now gone is the half bottel of Lucas diesel fuel cond. with a full tank and work the snot out of her on the bagger the shutt that came out the pipe was unbelieveable. and this 806 gets the bag worked off her every time it comes out of the shed .

Right on the money! The valve adjustment is a good thing to do periodically as a maintenance thing. I helped a neighbor with a JD 4020 last year with the same problem and the valve adjustment made a noticable difference because we found two tight ones. In my experience, admittedly with on-road light truck diesels, when the pump is bad, the injecors are not usually far behind... if they are not way ahead. I agree 100%. Valves should be set every 1000 hrs. in a perfect world. In the real world, many engines go 10,000 hrs before anyone bothers to set the valves. And it does make a huge difference on a diesel. As for injectors, they too should be pulled, tested and cleaned every 1000 hrs., at least thats what the major manufacturers recommend.
