The needle on my oil pressure gauge bounces all over the place. Has anyone seen that before. I've only got a few hours on it since I rebuilt the engine. It has plenty of oil.

thanks for all the input. I didn't boil the block but I cleaned all the oil passages with a gun cleaning rod. I was fairly sure I assembled the engine right, but I 've been known to make mistakes before. Oh well! We'll try the gauge first and maybe I'll get lucky.

Did you have that engine block dipped and the oil passages cleaned? Hal

I did dont know if this poster did or not. Mine stayed at about 60 psi when it was cold and dropped down to about 58 when hot but tonight it started jumping all over eratically up and down before she blew up. I need to get the stephascope out to be sure but it sounds like the second cyl back to me mid motor ratle clinking type noise. any ideas? JON

Jon, I would pull the oil pan and look for any metal particles in the bottom of the pan. You may have a bearing that failed for some reason. You could inspect the rod and main bearings while you have pan off. If there's nothing obvious in this area you may may need to pull the head. Sometimes you have a failure with an engine rebuild even with good machining, parts and assembly. Had a 327 Chevy engine to run run fine
for several months and and then had one heck of a noise. The reground crankshaft broke at the counter weight. The auto parts store did give me another shaft and bearings. Let us know what you find. Hal

Dale, H's usually run pretty even oil pressure, I'd think oil pump, pick up/screen area may have a problem. Check your guage against a hand held guage then work from there. Mike in Exeter Ontario
