OK I was mad and Hurt and was looking for someone to blame. I admit it and 1/2 to 3/4 of the posters came back with what I wanted to hear. Heck I even got emails from some wondering what they could do to help. And thats what I needed to hear. And now I am ready to tell what happened. I was told by two different people on two different boards it may not have even been the Farmll board that running this new motor at 2560.RPMs @ 245 degrees would not hurt it and it would start to run cooler when it got broke in better. I ran the ol girl here and there on the bush hog never opening her up for more than a sec or two. And also up and down the road and such W/O any problems never letting her get above 195 on the heat gauge. But yesterday when I hooked her up to the 8 Foot Off sets and opened her up and ran it that way and let it get hot and ran it that way something happened.
Now ChadS told me that was a little to hot and check things and drop the RPMs down to about 2200 or so But Did I listen to ChadS NO. Thats why I figured I was givin bum Info the ones that said to run it at high Rs and Hot.
I bet alot of you would have thought the same but instead started to jump all over me,And at that point thats what I did not want to hear. SO I AM SORRY FOR THE POST

Well, I think the problem is that you took advice on building a pulling engine and applied it to a farm engine. A pulling engine only has to run 10-15 seconds at full load. At that point everything is still relatively cool and the high load is no big deal for that short time. When farming under a heavy load for an extended period, it just will not last. Kindof like hotrod diesel truck. You can run it real fast and hard for a few seconds and you are okay, but load it with a heavy load on a steap hill and you will melt it down.

Have you found what failed? I don't think I would run a 190-195 degree thermostat. Hal

I have rebuilt A/C engines for a long time beginning back in the Airforce in 1962.
These engines are designed to run wide open or thereabouts all the time. To Break in one, I mount it, pull it to the end of the runway, fire it up and go wide open till its broken in. You will see the temperature indicating higher than ordinary operating temperature. You will also see the temperature drop on each cylinder as the rings seat. (these engines are air cooled)

You have got to be careful with the oils you use on break in. An oil with too low a viscosity can shear and lose film strength at high temperatures. Polimers are added to oils base to prevent it from thinning as it warms up and to prevent breakdown of the oil. On a good rebuild, you are going to have more heat. To assure myself that I have the best oil in there for the break in, I use synthetics as they give high film strength. It cost more but I have not had any adverse results due to oil breakdown. Also, the radiatior and the circulating oil should have been cooling this engine down. Have you checked the cooling system and the oil circulating system on the engine? The point is, you may have had a combination of these problems that were feeding off each other.

Your post was a little strong but no harm done. You need to be able to blow off steam among friends.

I am really surprised by the 2650 RPM and over 190 degrees.

Is this a balanced motor for the high rpm's?

They last forever at 1650 RPM. Did you intentionally set the governer to 2650?

NO ANDY, This was a pretty much stock H motor that I added some inhansements to High compression and basically a super H set up. I started on a Sat morning on my gov actually I had three and I built one my self to a few things chad had told me. When I got all done I ended up with the close to 2600 RPMs Dont know how exactly did not try to it just ended up that way. I also am running it springless solid in the Gov. Just something I wanted to do for pulling. The good part of this is being I am a parts dealer I think I can get most anything I need waranteed I hope . LOL HAVE A GOOD ONE JON

I don't understand why you were trying to farm with a pulling tractor? I have built two Hs for pulling and I know that if I tried to plow, disk, grind feed or any other thing that required anything more than no load for more than fifteen minutes it would be disaster. The cooling systems on these engines were not built for continuous use at more than double the factory HP. Everyone makes mistakes and I know it is easy to be an expert after the fact.

If you want to rebuild it as a pulling engine, I could give you some tips that can make a big difference. But, you won't be able to use it for farming and have it live.

For what it's worth, I very rarely go to the tractor pulling forum. Maybe it's just my opinion but it does seem that the majority of the folks on that forum will deliberately steer you wrong because they are afraid of the potential competition. ChadS is the exception, he seems to know what works, and is not afraid of competition.

I would disagree with you about the pulling forum.I think most people ARE honest at pulling.There are very few secrets left out there and you just have to know when to listen and when to walk away.If you truly don't know the answer to your question why on earth would you trust a complete strangers OPINION about your tractor?Why would'nt you go to your nearestdealer and ask to speak to one of thier mechanics.Sorry about the rant but I don't like people bunching ALL of the pullers in with the few cheats and liars.

You may have galled a sleeve and piston from the heat. Too hot for the oil to lube the cylinder wall and piston. Hal

Jon,
I believe that unless it was without coolant in the head, or that coolant was boiling to vapor, that some other cause was responsible. The primary reason for breakin is to let bearings seat well and the rings/pistons to get used to running in new holes at various speeds. Find the cause (I bet a stripped thread or bad component. It takes a very wild trip into bad to puke on of these engines. Best of luck, JimN

Magman,
I also think the puller guys are different in that they are true gear heads. Many think nothing about ripping down a motor and building back up again. They are on a different plain when it comes to wrenching.
