Billy,
It was great to meet you in person and to see the farm...plus your veritable stable of H's and M's! What a great feeling to see so much red under one roof. I was serious about giving you a hand, you know. On the mechanics side, I'm sure I could learn a thing or three from YOU. But I'm also available for a little hay work, or tobacco work or whatever--as long as red tractors are part of the picture. By the way, the Walworth County Fair starts today. Can't wait. They hold tractor pulls at 11:30 and 7:00 tonight. Take care, Gunn.

Oh David...don't worry. Next time we have a project in the works up here...I will be sure to include you. And I guess in the meantime I owe you a visit next time I get in your neck of the woods.

I'm sure glad when you stopped into town you ran into someone that at least knew my name. Smaller towns are great that way!

We'll be in touch!

Billy

Was that your picture Billy? That one reminds me a lot of the farm back home in Kansas. It's my desktop picture now.

Yup...that one was mine. Took it about a month and a half ago. It was the last load I took off the field at the end of the day...so I thought I would just take a quick picture. It was just a lovely day; sunny and eighty degrees, light breeze, and the H didn't look too bad either. Plus beer tastes good on days like that...so I decided to grab the camera when I headed back to the shop to grab one. :-)

You know, I could tell all that from the picture! I feel like a beer now just looking at it!

I'm really quite jealous. I'm trying to figure out a way to get into the hay business. My grandfather and uncles custom hayed for a lot of people in Kansas back in the 60's and 70's. All I need now is land, a bigger tractor, (just got my first, an H), a swather, a baler, a haywagon, planter, and some help. Hay and Forage Magazine had an article about a guy up here in Lafayette that hays on 200 acres he doesn't own or rent. Finds undeveloped commercial land and offers to grow on it until they build so they don't have to mow. Talks about how he makes $10/ small bale. That's what I need!

Take Care,

Bri

It's not too bad getting into the haying business as long as you can find some ground to get going on. We are running only about 12 acres...but with the deep soil up here, you can get three good cuts every year...and sometimes four. I do all of it with the Farmall H, a nice NH 467 haybine, and a JD 14T baler. All of them are quite reliable and simple to maintain.

It almost pays more to sell the small squares. As more and more operations are going to the large squares and round bales, the horse farms have been left behind since they don't have the necessary equipment to handle these size bales. It's not unheard of to get $4 a bale delivered right before the snow flies. Between cutting, raking, and baling, a thousand bales...I've maybe got 9 hours in it with the above listed equipment. That's a $4000 paycheck for one day of hard work. That's not bad.

I'll probably get you those pictures early next week!

Billy

Great shots, Brian! I especially liked the Super M, since I have one. Where in Indiana was this show? My wife grew up in Shelbyville. David

The show was in Tipton, 30 mins. north of Indy. I had my darned camera set on too high of a resolution, so it took really big pics, but I ran out of memory way before I wanted to. Missed a lot during the pulls I would've liked to have taken. Kept going back and deleting ones I didn't like so much to take new ones. But was a really great time, was my first tractor show. Even the girls had fun.

Funny side note. When we first got there and drove thru the gate, I saw the tractors and just kept going! The people at the gate wanted some $$ for parking, but I was like a kid in the candy store. They were laughing when I backed up to pay.
