Good Afternoon, I was wondering if the TA from a 300 will work in a 400. I know the external case is different but will the internal parts interchange?
Thanks in advance,
DeWayne

Wardner is right except for a few changes there the same parts other than transmission input shafts, the shaft bearing and thrust washer and bearing cage for shaft and bearing. From ramp and rollers to front the same. Changes along the way were the bearing on rear of planet carrier narrowed up with a thin washer used between it and rollers. It replaced wide bearing that didn't use washer. Rollers changed to crome plated and ramp change to match. Hardly ever find early parts in one now though.

Forgot, in case you don't know and are taking whole thing apart, the planet gears are a matched set and need timed in correct position when installing. If you switch a 300 planet gears ,the carrier and sun gear to a 400 and vice versa as a assembly. Ramp will need to be unbolted from bearing cage, installed on carrier and rollers put in before putting back togeather.

About ten years ago, I found a new TA for something like a 340. It was in a bunch of parts that were bought at a dealer's liquidation auction. The new owner had tons of stuff in two forty foot trailers. I paid $150 for the TA.

I changed out the output shaft which is called "Shaft, transmission drive and secondary sun gear" and installed the corresponding SMTA part. The SMTA part number is 361 288 R1. It works fine.

I beg to differ with anyone who says a 300 TA does not look like a 400 TA. You probably couldn't tell unless you laid them side by side. The one with the bigger output fits the bigger tractor series. I suspect that there were some changes made along the way but the late units will fit the early tractors by replacing the shaft where necessary.

BTW, most TA's can be made operational by replacing only the ramp and rollers. This is what the rebuilders do. Of course, I am sure they inspect and test as well.
