Lost hydraulics on our 424D, No steering, no 3 point lift, checked fluid level, cleaned out suction screen, replaced hydralic filter. Did I forget anything? Im leaning toward thinking the hydraulic pump died. Any help would be appreciated Gary

Not familiar with the arrangement of the 242D, but I had the pump on my 300U lose prime on a couple occasions. I removed the reservoir vent cover and shot the reservoir full of very low pressure (about 5 psi) air and it started pumping again. Possibly a cheap and easy thing to try before spending the big bucks.

About the only time I am right. The nearest IH dealer is 35 miles away, I will have to call them tomorrow. Being below poverty level retired, I hate doing that. For tonight I will be rearing up on old YT posts on Hydraulic pumps and reading the service manual LOL. Do you know if anyone makes an aftermarket rebuild kit or do you have to just replace the pump?

They have them on YT under parts on the left of the screen,a little over $400 I believe, cause I looked on there after reading your post.I wish a 560 pump would work, cause I have a good one of those.Im 60 miles northeast of Kansas City, but I used to haul a lot of meal south to those chicken farms, and bring dried chicken by-products back north to dog food plants. What town are you near?

We are outside Vienna Mo. Which is close to Rolla on I-44 about half way between St Louis and Springfield.

I'm no 424 expert, but it's pretty rare for a hydraulic pump to just quit all at once unless there's a major failure. Am I correct in thinking that a 424 has just a regular gear type pump? If so, you should be able to take it apart and inspect it. Unless it's got a broken drive gear, drive shaft, or pump gear, it should pump at least some oil. With a gear pump that's totally worn out, you would have noticed the hydraulics getting slower and weaker over a long period of time. Could you have a releif valve sticking open? If you call the dealer, talk to the service department before you talk to the parts department.

IT started acting up about a week ago. Steering got harder and harder etc. I had a post hole digger on it so I didn't raise and lower the 3 point until today. Dad used to say that most of what was wrong with things was dirt, so I will tear it apart and see if it looks gummed up. It's a dual gear type pump 9 GPM, but there is also a control valve body and the steering control box, plus the 3 point and front wheel cylinders, so it could be anywhere really. I have the blue ribbon service book on the hydraulic system, I just have to figure out what all those pretty pictures mean. thanks

Don't take the pump apart until you've inspected any relief valves or dump valves in the system. I'd be willing to bet just about anything that you've got a stuck valve somewhere.
