The early Super A used a square tapered shaft. I'Ve not had any experience with those but understand they can be tightened using shim stock. The later model used a round tapered shaft with woodruff keys. Usually new keys will fix those but sometimes the keyways need repair. That vertical shaft problem can give almost two complete turns of the steering wheel. You have to remove the front axle to get to the vertical shaft. The change over on that shaft occured in mid 1951.

Very rarely the steering wheel shaft will give problems in it's bearings. If you have end movement on that shaft, it will need attention. If there is no end movement I wouldn't take it apart.
