SWD9 oil guage

Hello,

What is the correct style oil guage for a SWD9? I now have an un-numbered style with the red band on the left. The oil pressure is off the guage. I can barely get it to read at 5/8 to 3/4 of the guage when hot and barely turning over. Should I be using the numbered style guage for this tractor? My manual says this engine is supposed to have 60-75 psi oil pressure if I remember right. Why is the oil pressure so high on these old beasts? All of my modern diesels barely hold 40 psi oil pressure.

Mark

One of the sure ways to tell if the oil pressure regulator is stuck is to use a gauge with a 150psi full scale mark then running from idle to high idle watch the gauge if it goes to -lets say- 80psi at idle, then as RPM increase it continues to rise proportional to RPM and never levels out, I would suspect the pressure regulator. If it goes to the 80psi then climes to 86 or some specific number, and levels off, I believe it may be an agressive spring in the regulator, but not stuck.
If it has been the way it is for years (and not stuck) I would not fix it. If it is stuck, I would fix it for sure as there is the possibility of eroding bearing material, and excessive wear on the drive gear and pump. JimN

There are three basic types of oil gauges for the old IH engines --
15 PSI full scale for the F series
45 PSI for the A, B, and C
75 PSI for the H, M, and 9 series

Sorry I don"t have the part numbers, and the part numbers will also vary depending on what logo is on them, but many of the restoration suppliers tell what the full scale PSI is. Someone should chime in here with the correct part numbers.
Having said that, if the correct gauge is on there and it still is running too high, the regulating valve in the oil filter base may be stuck. Brian

Mark - I'm not sure which gage is "correct". I've seen both 0-75 psi and 3-zone gages on restored SWD9 tractors.

Anyway the high reading on yours is likely from a tired gage. As gage bourdon tubes get old they sometimes weaken and lose some of their "spring". This causes a pressure indication higher than actual. (However high oil pressure could also be from an inoperative pressure regulating valve in the oil pump or other problem in the engine lube system.)

Suggest before doing anything else buy yourself a cheap 0-80 or 0-100 psi gage at Autozone, TISCO or wherever. Install it temporarily to find out the actual oil pressure you engine is currently running. With luck you may find simple gage replacement will solve your problem!

Nope, gauge is new and I checked it to another guage.
What do you mean by a three zone guage? Mine is the style that you see on the H and M most of the time (small red zone to the left about 20 percent of the guage travel)

My error - I meant to type 2 zone! (Amazingly the "2" and "3" keys are right next to each together on my keyboard...)

Sounds now like you've got a stuck oil pressure regulator. The good news is the high pressure readings you are seeing says your oil pump and engine bearings are in excellent shape!

But...as I said in the first post my manual says they should have 60-75 psi i think. This seems really high compared to other diesels I've been around.

Yeah Mark - 60 - 75 psi seems high compared to the diesels I'm around too. For instance the Cummins 855 in my truck runs 45 psi max and idles around 30 when warm.

OTOH "normal" oil pressure for my Super M (gas engine) is 60 - 65 psi. So 75 PSI for your SWD9 may be just fine.

My T444E (7.3 Ford Powerstroke) in my IH truck runs even less pressure that your Cummins. I wonder if high oil pressure is a think of the past done to compensate for lower oil quality. I'm sure the oil we use nowadays compared to the 40-50's is 3-4 times better.

I don't know the oil pressure the 7.3 powerstroke in my F250 - the gage calibrations are simply "L" and "H". However the needle never varies from about the center of the gage regardless of RPM or temperature. (It may actually work only as a "mechanical idiot light" for all I know...)

----

You are likely correct regarding lower oil pressures today on account of better quality oil. Also better bearing materials, closer manufacturing tolerances, improved oil filtration, etc contribute.

Incidentally lower oil pressure = slightly improved fuel economy (ie. less energy lost running the oil pump).
